1 DESCRIPTION The location of the Upper James Watershed is located in northeastern South Dakota as well as southeastern North Dakota. It includes the following counties located in North Dakota Barnes, Dickey, LaMoure, Logan, Ransom, Sargent, and Stutsman. As well as the following counties located in South Dakota are Brown, Day, Edmunds, Marshall, McPherson, Roberts and Spink. The Upper James Watershed is around 2,713,000. Around 63 percent of the land use is used for cropland with the dominate crops being corn, spring wheat, oats, soybeans, and sunflowers. 19 percent of the land use is for pasture for the cultivation of livestock. 1
2 The general climate of the Watershed is a semi-humid and continental climate. It has large seasonal fluctuations in temperature that includes both long cold winters as well as warm summers. In the winter the average temperature is around 19 degrees Fahrenheit The humidity is normally relatively high and there are frequent high winds in this location. Storms in this area are normally moderate intensity and have a short duration period. In these storms there are localized areas that expensive high intensity storms but these also are of a short duration. In a given year there are many recurring periods of drought and near-drought conditions are fairly common. For a normal year 70 to 80 percent of the precipitation occurs from around April through September. A majority of the rainfall occurs in the month of June which is during the growing season of the area. The normal growing season is around 115 to 130 days with the first frost around mid-september and the last frost around mid-may. The average rainfall amount a year is 21.2 inches per year which is measured in LaMoure, ND at the United States Weather Bureau Station. 2

5 There are three general landforms that are located in this Watershed are lake plain, glacial uplands, and alluvial flood plains located along the stream channels. The Upper James Watershed is found in the Great Plains Physiographic Province, James River lowland division. The topographic of the area is anywhere from the flat nearly level lake plain to the undulating hills of the glacial uplands. 5
6 The geological features located throughout the entire watershed are Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rock formations. The igneous rock formations are granite, gneiss, limestone, sandstone, and shale. Located above the Precambrian bedrock are Cretaceous sedimentary rocks that are of marine origin. The surface of the watershed was formed by many glacial events that occurred during the Pleistocene time era. As the glacier retreated they deposited sediments which are an unconsolidated heterogeneous mixture of clay, silt, sand, gravel, and boulders which all varied in size as well as shape. A majority of the glacial till is around 100 to 300 feet thick. In some areas of the watershed the glacial till is around 1000 feet thick. In most areas the upper layer of the glacial till (20 to 150 feet) has been weathered by the climate in the area. 6
7 Both North Dakota and South Dakota have designated the beneficial uses for the surface water located in this watershed. North Dakota s beneficial use is from the Standards of Quality for Waters of the State (NDDH, 2006). The six benefits that are addressed in this area are as follows: aquatic life, recreation, drinking water, fish consumption, agriculture, and industrial. All streams and lakes in North Dakota are assigned the beneficial uses of aquatic life and recreation. Streams in North Dakota are also assigned the beneficial use of agriculture and industrial. Depending on where the stream or lake is located the beneficial use of drinking water also will be assigned to the body of water. Water that is located in South Dakota is classified with any of the following that is considered to be a beneficial use. These include domestic water supply waters, cold water permanent fish lige propagation waters, cold water marginal fish life propagation waters, warm water permanent fish life propagation waters, warm water semi-permanent fish life propagation waters, warm water marginal fish life propagation waters, immersion recreation waters, fish and wildlife propagation, recreation, and stock watering waters, irrigation waters, and commerce and industry waters. All streams that are found in South Dakota are assigned the beneficial uses of fish and wildlife propagation, recreation, and stock watering waters, and irrigation waters. As in North Dakota the stream may be classified in other ways depending on its location. All lakes that are located in South Dakota are assigned the beneficial uses of immersion recreation waters, limited contact recreation waters, and fish and wildlife propagation, recreation, and stock watering waters. 7
8 The demographics of the Upper James Watershed are a majority of the people who live in this area are of Caucasian background (96.9%). The second highest is the American Indian which is around 2.3%. Asian, African American, and other bring in the last percentage of around 0.8%. Looking at where the population of the watershed is located a majority of them live in an urban setting (32,681). The next largest group is those who live in a rural setting but not on a farm (19,609). The last group of residents is those that live on a farm (4,014). The hydrogeological setting of the Upper James watershed varies depending on where the location is located in the watershed. The general climate of the Watershed is a semi-humid and continental climate. It has large seasonal fluctuations in temperature that includes both long cold winters as well as warm summers. A majority of the watershed in North Dakota is a network of streams that enable the city of Aberdeen to maintain their water supply. Located in Northern South Dakota and Southern North Dakota there are a network of different reservoirs and lakes that are maintained by the streams that are located in North Dakota. The climate in North Dakota and South Dakota are the same other than during the wet months the ground water located in the northern part of the watershed is much higher. 8
