9 Soil Descriptions COMFREY SERIES - Soil # 18 The Comfrey series consists of deep poorly and very poorly drained soils that formed in loamy post glacial alluvium on flood plains and alluvial fans. These soils have moderate permeability. They have slopes of less than 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 26 inches, and mean annual temperature is about 48 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Comfrey clay loam with a plane slope of less than 1 percent on a flood plain in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Comfrey soils have plane or concave slopes with gradient of less than 2 percent on flood plains and alluvial fans. They formed in loamy post glacial alluvium primarily in areas of Late Wisconsin glaciation. The climate is humid continental with warm summers and cold winters. Mean annual precipitation is 24 to 32 inches, and mean annual temperature is 45 to 53 degrees F. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: The main ones are the Chaska, Millington, and Oshawa soils. The poorly drained Chaska soils are calcareous and are associates along larger streams. The very poorly drained Oshawa soils are in old meander channels. Poorly drained calcareous Millington soils are common associates in some places. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly and very poorly drained. Surface runoff is slow. Permeability is moderate. CLARION SERIES - Soil # 102B The Clarion series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils formed in glacial till on uplands. Slopes range from 1 to 9 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 47 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation is about 29 inches. TYPICAL PEDON: Clarion loam on a convex upland slope of 4 percent gradient - in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Clarion soils typically are on convex slopes in the relatively undissected, gently undulating to rolling Late Wisconsin till plain. The topography is hilly in some places. Slopes commonly are short and irregular with gradients typically from 2 to 5 percent but range from 1 to 9 percent. The soils formed in calcareous glacial till of the Des Moines Lobe advance. Mean annual air temperature is 45 to 50 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation is 27 to 32 inches. Annual frost free days range from 120 to 180 days. Elevation above sea level ranges from 700 to 1400 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Nicollet, Omsrud, Storden, and Webster series. Nicollet and Webster soils, which form a drainage sequence with Clarion soils, are the most common associates in undulating to gently rolling landscapes. Omsrud and Storden soils are often associated in rolling or hilly landscapes and are on the steeper or more strongly convex slopes. Storden soils do not have a cambic horizon free of carbonates and Omsrud soils do not have saturation in the lower part of the profile. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Surface runoff is medium. Permeability is moderate. The seasonal high water table is at depths of 4 to 6 feet during November to July in most years. CALCO SERIES - Soil # 349 The Calco series consists of deep, moderately permeable soils formed in alluvium on bottom lands. Typically they are poorly drained, but some are very poorly drained. Slope ranges from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 49 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches. TYPICAL PEDON: Calco silty clay loam on level bottom land in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Calco soils are on low benches and flood plains. Slope gradients are less than 2 percent. Calco soils formed in calcareous alluvium of mixed mineralogy derived from both loess and glacial till. Mean annual temperature is about 45 to 50 degrees
10 Soil Descriptions F, and mean annual precipitation ranges from 26 to 32 inches. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Colo, Solomon, Wabash, and Zook soils and the Kennebec and Luton soils, all on flood plains on landscape positions similar to Calco positions; and the Bremer and Nevin soils on stream benches at higher elevations. Kennebec soils are better drained and lack carbonates in the solum. Luton soils are more clayey and neutral or slightly acid throughout the solum. The Bremer and Nevin soils lack carbonates and have argillic horizons. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Dominantly poorly drained but some are very poorly drained. Surface runoff is slow, and runoff is received from adjacent soils. Permeability is moderate. MINNETONKA SERIES - Soil # 287 The Minnetonka series consists of deep poorly drained soils that formed in glacial lacustrine sediments on glacial lake plains and moraines. These soils have slow permeability. Their slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. Mean annaul precipitation is about 28 inches, and mean annual temperature is about 47 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Minnetonka silty clay loam with a plane slope of less than 1 percent on a glacial lake plain in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Minnetonka soils have slightly concave through slightly convex slopes on glacial lake plains and on glacial moraines that have a mantle of lacustrine sediments. Their slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. They formed in layer of clayey lacustrine deposits ranging from about 2 1/2 to 10 feet or more in thickness. These deposits typically overlie friable loam till, but in some places silty lacustrine deposits as much as 3 feet in thickness are between the clayey sediments and till. These sediments are Late Wisconsin Age. The climate is humid continental with warm summers and cold winters. Mean annual temperature is 45 to 50 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is 25 to 30 inches. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: The main ones are Barbert, Shorewood, and Lura soils which formed in sediments similar to those of the Minnetonka soils. Moderately and somewhat poorly drained Shorewood soils are on higher lying or more sloping terrain. The very poorly drained Barbert soils are in shallow depressions. The very poorly drained Lura soils are in distinct depressions. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained. Surface runoff is slow. Permeability is slow. GUCKEEN SERIES - Soil # 230 The Guckeen series consists of deep moderately well and somewhat poorly drained soils that formed in a 20 to 40 inch thick mantle of clayey glacial lacustrine sediments and in underlying loamy calcareous glacial till on ground moraines or till plains. These soils have moderate and moderately slow permeability. They have slopes of 1 to 18 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches, and mean annual temperature is about 48 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Guckeen silty clay loam with a 2 percent slightly convex slope on a clayey mantled ground moraine, cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils have plane or slightly convex on nearly level to moderately steep till plains or ground moraines. Slope gradients are 1 to 18 percent. These soils formed in a 20 to 40 inch thick mantle of clayey lacustrine sediments and in underlying loamy calcareous glacial till or modified glacial till. These deposits are Late Wisconsinan in age. Mean annual temperature is approximately 45 to 52 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is approximately 26 to 32 inches. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: The main ones are the well drained Kamrar, the poorly drained Marna, and the very poorly drained Lura soils. These soils formed in materials similar to that of Guck-
11 Soil Descriptions een. Kamrar soils are on higher or more sloping terrain. Marna soils are on adjacent nearly level or level terrain. Lura soils are in depressions. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well and somewhat poorly drained. Surface runoff is medium to rapid. Permeability is slow or moderately slow. SHOREWOOD SERIES - Soil # 286 The Shorewood series consists of very deep, moderately well drained and somewhat poorly drained soils that formed in a mantle of clayey glacial lacustrine sediments and underlying loamy calcareous till or that formed entirely in lacustrine sediments. These soils are in glacial lake plains and moraines. Permeability is moderately slow or slow. Slopes range from 0 to 12 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean annual temperature is about 47 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Shorewood silty clay loam with a slightly convex 3 percent slope in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Shorewood soils have plane or slightly convex slopes on glacial lake plains and moraines. Slopes generally are about 100 to 250 feet in length with gradients of 0 to 12 percent. The Shorewood soils formed in clayey lacustrine material commonly 30 to 60 inches or more in thickness over friable loam or clay loam glacial till. In some pedons a silty layer up to 3 feet thick is between the clayey layer and the underlying deposits. Mean annual temperature is about 45 to 50 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation is about 25 to 32 inches. Frost free days range from 124 to 165. Elevations above sea level range from 900 to 1200 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Minnetonka, Barbert, and Lura soils which are members of a hydrosequence with Shorewood soils. Poorly drained Minnetonka soils are on nearby level terrain. Very poorly drained Barbert and Lura soils are in depressions and swales. medium. Permeability is moderately slow or slow. The perched water table for the moderately well drained phase is 2.5 to 4.0 April to June, and 1.5 to 2.5 for the moderately wet phase in most years. LESTER SERIES - Soil # 106D The Lester series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in calcareous loamy glacial till on till plains and moraines. These soils have moderate permeability. Their slopes range from 2 to 70 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean annual temperature is about 47 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Lester loam with a convex slope of about 9 percent on a ground moraine in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils have convex slopes on moraines and till plains. Slope gradients range from 2 to 70 percent. They formed in calcareous, loamy glacial till of late Wisconsinan Age. Mean annual temperature ranges from 45 degrees to 52 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 25 to 33 inches. Frost free days range from 125 to 165. Elevations range from 700 to 1600 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include the Cordova, Dundas, Glencoe, Hamel, Houghton, Klossner, Le Sueur, Muskego, and Nessel soils. Poorly drained Cordova and somewhat poorly and poorly drained Dundas soils are on flats and upper drainageways with a high seasonal water table. Very poorly drained Glencoe, Houghton, Klossner, and Muskego soils are mostly in depressions. Poorly drained Hamel soils are on foot and toe slopes. Moderately well drained Le Sueur and Nessel soils are on slightly elevated flats and gently convex slopes. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Permeability is moderate. Runoff is moderate high or high DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well and somewhat poorly drained. Surface runoff is
