It is made up of soil and rocks. 7) Geo- means earth. 8) The layers of Earth were formed from an increase in Earth s gravity as well as an increase in pressure. 9) The inner core is the deepest layer of the Earth. 10) Soil is top-most layer of the Earth in which plants grow. It is made up of organic remains, clay and rock particles. 11) The atmosphere is a mixture of gases surrounding Earth, held in place by gravity. 12) 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and some water vapor and other elements. 13) The temperature and amount of pressure decrease the further away from earth you get. 14) The ozone layer starts 9 miles above earth s surface and it s made up of ozone (O3). It protects animals and plants from getting too much of the Sun s dangerous ultraviolet (UV) rays. 15) Students should create an accurate and detailed drawing of the rain shadow effect. 16) Atmo- means gas or vapor. 17) Troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere 18) Lifting occurs when mountains push the air upwards. Taller mountains push the air high enough to where the air reaches it saturation point and then precipitates. 19) The ozone layer helps protect us from the sun s harmful UV rays. If we receive too much UV radiation we will have a higher risk of getting skin cancer and earth s temperature increases. 20) Just as mountains can force wind and clouds upwards they also funnel the wind. Wind that encounter a blockage move through the path of least resistance. Wind funnels often see high speed winds 21) The hydrosphere describes the combined mass of water found on, under, and over the surface of a planet. 22) Water can either be salt water (97.5%) or fresh water (2.5%). 23) Surface water is the water that is located on the surface of the planet such as lakes, swamps, rivers, streams snow/ice and soil moisture. 24) Water responds to temperature change more slowly than does land. It takes longer to heat water, and longer for it to cool down. Therefore, locations near the oceans experience milder climate changes. 25) Landforms found in the ocean are similar to those found on land because many of them were created by the same forces.
10 26) Examples might include oceans, rivers, streams, groundwater, glaciers, atmosphere or other acceptable answers. 27) Only 2.5% of Earth s water is usable and is found as surface water (lakes, streams, rivers, etc.). 28) Energy from the sun is absorbed, stored and transported by the oceans which affects temperature, precipitation and wind. 29) The majority of freshwater can be found trapped in glaciers. 30) Groundwater is fresh water that can be found underground. Many people get water from wells. 31) The biosphere includes all living things on Earth as well as the land, sea and atmosphere in which they live. 32) Answers will vary but should highlight the interactions between the spheres of the earth for each example. 33) The amount of rain primarily determines what types of organisms live in a region. 34) Biomes are regions of the planet with similar climate and types of plants and animals. Biomes are classified as either terrestrial (land) or aquatic (water) biomes. 35) Answers will vary but should give examples of the interactions between the spheres for each example.
