1 CHANGES TO THE GEOLOGY & GEOPHYSICS PROGRAMS FOR March 15, 2017 For , the changes are: (a) Students in the Honours programs in Geology will be allowed to take either Geology 509 (Independent Study) or Geology 510 (Senior Thesis) to satisfy the independent research project component of the program; (b) Geophysics 419 is added as a required course in the Geophysics program, and; (c) Physics 321 and 323 have been added as options in the Geophysics Minor program. See the details below. Starting in Fall 2017, a ruling not specified in the Calendar, that was applied in has changed, as follows: The course SCIE 311 (Writing and Reviewing Scientific Reports) can no longer be replaced with COMS 363 (Professional and Technical Communication). Degree Navigator should be updated before the registration period (March 27 31), and students are advised to consult their Degree Navigator to determine which courses they still need to graduate. Students may follow any version of Degree Navigator from the point at which they were admitted to the Faculty of Science, e.g., F13 or later for those admitted in F13. Students must follow one set of requirements in their entirety (students may not mix requirements from different regulation years). Students may focus their studies by following the Hydrogeology/Environmental Geoscience stream* or the Solid Earth Geoscience stream*. This entails choosing appropriate options which are outlined below. Students in the Petroleum Geology concentration mostly follow what could be considered a Sedimentary stream. * Realize that a stream is not a separate program. Rather, it consists of a set of recommended s that students can take within the BSc Geology program to focus their studies in a certain area of interest. Outlines of Programs and Streams: Page 2: Page 3: Page 4: Page 5: Page 6: Page 7: The BSc Geology Major Program The BSc Geology Major Program (Petroleum Geology Concentration) The BSc Geology Major Program (Hydrogeology/Environmental Geoscience stream) The BSc Geology Major Program (Solid Earth Geoscience stream) The BSc Applied and Environmental Geology Major Program (Note that admission to this program has been suspended as of Fall 2015) The BSc Geophysics Major Program Course Replacements and Additional Information 1

Additional Information: For those doing a Geophysics Minor Program: The requirement Geophysics 453 and 565 (which appears in the online calendar) is replaced in by Geophysics 453 and one of Geophysics 565, Physics 321, or 323. Science 311: In past years, Geology students who were not able to take Science 311 (Writing and Reviewing Scientific Reports), a required course in the Geology programs, because it was full or because it conflicted with their schedules, were allowed to replace it with Communication and Media Studies 363 (Professional and Technical Communication). This practice is now discontinued, that is, SCIE 311 will now be enforced. Changes being made to the offering of SCIE 311 will mean that all Geology students should be able to take SCIE 311, and in their second year. Information on APEGA (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta): Students are advised to visit to fill out an application form for the APEGA Student Advantage Program (the ASAP).
