3 Study Context and Objectives The construction and operation of the HS2 route will have varying impacts on the lives of people living along the route. HS2 Ltd wish to understand: the type of people who will be affected the communications which residents of affected communities desire Identify the demographic characteristics of residents that will be affected by construction and operation of HS2 Identify the effectiveness of ground communication to date Understand future communication needs of residents, particularly those in hard-to-reach groups Page 3

6 Methodology: Demographic Mapping Areas of interest defined by HS2 (300m from proposed route in urban environments, 1000m in rural locations) 2011 Census Output Areas identified and AddressBase software used to refine Detailed demographic profile created for each OA presented in spreadsheets Route divided into 17 sections for mapping purposes Separate maps produced for each demographic characteristic: Age Disability Ethnicity Health Households with/without children Relationship status Marital status Primary language Population density Religion Social grade In total 187 maps were produced Page 6

12 Methodology: Residents Survey - Sample Design Used demographic mapping / spreadsheets to identify areas, and within them Output Areas, containing: communities with high levels of a wide range of protected characteristics geographical variation 4 areas identified for the survey, covering urban, sub-urban & rural locations: London Kenilworth/Balsall Common Aylesbury Birmingham Quotas were set to provide a sample from a range of protected groups (but not representative of the area of interest). 13 Residents Survey - Questionnaire Demographics (age, home ownership, marital status, household composition, SEG, gender, ethnicity, religion, disability and general health); Overall understanding of HS2; Information received, in particular relating to different property schemes; Information understood on property schemes; Preferences for future communication; and Feedback on two HS2 publications on property schemes. 14 Applications Findings from the mapping and residents survey have been used to shape the Communication Team s activities and policies. The research has been a useful resource as HS2 looks to develop a better understanding of the people affected by the project and how best to communicate with individuals and communities. The information is used by: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Team; Strategy and Analysis Team; The Community Engagement team. Page 14
