1 Name Per. Assigned Due Human Population Dynamics CAPT Embedded Task Essential Question: What factors influence population growth? The human population has existed for a little more than 500,000 years. About 10,000 years ago, the total human population was about 3 million people, most of them hunters and gatherers. The development of early agriculture provided a stable supply of food and as a result the human population increased rapidly and reached one billion (1,000,000,000) in The development of technology and medicine in the 20 th century reduced the death rate and increased the growth rate even further. Despite these advances, human population growth differs dramatically country by country. The United Nations designation of More Developed (MDCs) and Less Developed Countries (LDCs) is often used as an indicator of future population change within a country. But the picture can be much more complicated. Human geography is a large area of study within the field of geography that incorporates demography to study patterns that influence human society and changes in populations. Human geography can incorporate human demographics into the study of how human political, cultural, social, and economic conditions can influence changes on the distribution and impact of human populations on Earth. Performance Task: You have recently been hired by the United Nations to study the population trends in a less developed country and a developed country so that they can target international efforts to help the less developed country. Your job in this project will be to compare common demographic indicators in two different countries and then complete some background research on the human geography (political, cultural, social, and economic conditions) of each country and write a brief 3 page report describing your findings.

2 Guidelines: Comparing Population Projections Population trends can be explored at the U.S. Census Bureau To access the US Census Bureau database, find the yellow box in the middle of the screen titled Country Search and enter your parameters. Choose two countries from the list provided. Developed Country Least Developed Country Compare the changes in populations of both countries from 1995 to those projected to 2045, in 10 year increments (you should look at 6 population pyramids for each country, watch the link on how to animate your graphs). Is the population increasing, stabilizing, or declining? Is the age structure changing? Describe the changes over time for the population pyramid of each country. Population trends can be explored at the U.S. Census Bureau To access the US Census Bureau database, find the yellow box in the middle of the screen titled Country Search and enter your parameters. Factors Affecting Population Changes - Exploring World Populations By Economics and Demographics Content Requirements: 1. Demographics. Complete the key geographic indicator table provided for your MDC and your LDC and showing a comparison of the major demographic indicators; rate of natural increase, population growth rate, total fertility rate, and the age structure of the population. 2. Social Components. How much money does the country spend on medical care? What is the availability of medical care? What is the literacy (educational level) rate of the population? What are the current medical concerns in the country (communicable diseases like AIDS, or noncommunicable disease such as heart disease and cancer)?

3 3. Economic Conditions. What are the main sources of employment? What types of things are imported and exported from the country? What is the unemployment rate of the country? CIA World Factbook - A Treasure Trove of Information! Source Material Be sure to document any sources you used in your research. All sources should be appropriately cited and formatted.
