1 World Geography Unit 14 Title Suggested Dates Australia and the Pacific Realm 1 week 6 th 6 weeks Big Idea/Enduring Understanding The components of culture affect the way people live and shape the characteristics of regions. People, places, and environments have changed over time. Political, economic, and social processes shape cultural patterns and characteristics in Australia and the Pacific Realm. Guiding Questions How does the relative isolation of nations in the Pacific realm affect the elements of their culture? How has migration and colonization affected the culture of nations in the Pacific Realm? The resources included here provide teaching examples and/or meaningful learning experiences to address the District Curriculum. In order to address the TEKS to the proper depth and complexity, teachers are encouraged to use resources to the degree that they are congruent with the TEKS and research based best practices. Teaching using only the suggested resources does not guarantee student mastery of all standards. Teachers must use professional judgment to select among these and/or other resources to teach the district curriculum. Some resources are protected by copyright. The student is expected to: (B) interpret political, economic, social, and demographic indicators (gross domestic product per capita, life expectancy, literacy, and infant mortality) to determine the level of development and standard of living in nations using the terms Human Development Index, less developed, newly industrialized, and more developed. Supporting Standards RC 2 (6) Geography. The student understands the types, patterns, What political systems are there in Australia and the Pacific Realm? What social systems are there in Australia and the Pacific Realm? Specific questions for this region could include Does isolation protect traditional culture?
