DiNoto, Jr. Director of GeoTech Center Vince.dinoto@kctcs.edu Based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant DUE ATE Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation. Empowering Colleges: Expanding the Geospatial Workforce

What is the National Geospatial Technology Center of Excellence (GeoTech)? A National Science Foundation Funded group of educators with a common passion to bring Geospatial Technology to Learners. Creator of the GTCM for the US Department of Labor, revised Fall Creator and owner of the Program Assessment Tool. Creator and owner of the Personal Assessment Tool. Designers and creators of the Model Courses. Producer and designer of High Quality Professional Development. GeoEd East and West Webinars including co-produced events with Directions Magazine and KAMP Mentoring Partner with KAMP on GST National Map of Geospatial Programs. National Geospatial Educator Awards. Syllabus Repository

GTCM estop.org/competenc ymodel/competencymodels/geospatialtechnology.aspx or off the GeoTech Center website

How do Standards Effect GST? The US Department of Labors, Geospatial Technology Competency Model (GTCM) provides a look at the competencies required for geospatial jobs. The GTCM provides a descriptive foundation. The GTCM is one of the tools used in the development of the GISP exam. USGIF Essential Body of Knowledge for GEOINT uses the GTCM. GeoTech Center Model Curriculum based upon problem solving and national norms.

Personal Assessment Tool More than 200 items selected to assist individuals in knowing how prepared they are for the GISP exam. Accessible from the GeoTech Center s Website. Responders use a modified Bloom s Taxonomy to self assess. Results classified into 43 unique study areas based upon major categories Results returned with descriptive assessment of abilities. Supplement personal assessment may be developed in areas outside of the GISP exam. Remote Sensing will be added in the next few weeks

What have we learned? More than 100 individuals have viewed the instrument, from approximately 40 different states (dependents, like Guam). About 70 people have taken the instrument and received individualized feedback via . A zero represents no knowledge of the area and a four represents expertise.

Strengths Knowledge of graphic representation techniques, including thematic mapping, multivariate displays, and web mapping avg STD Knowledge of principles of map design, including symbolization, color use, and topography, for a variety of print and digital formats avg STD Knowledge of contour mapping avg STD Understanding of how the selection of data classification and/or symbolization techniques affect the message of the thematic map avg STD Knowledge of security restrictions on data (e.g., user permissions and access rights); avg STD Knowledge of different field types avg STD Knowledge of archiving and retrieval avg STD

Weaknesses Knowledge of digital file management avg STD Knowledge of statistics (e.g., descriptives, summary statistics, and R- squared) avg STD Knowledge of basic programming (e g., scripting, object oriented, query, and extensible) avg STD Knowledge of metadata and its standards (e.g., ISO and FGDC) avg STD Understanding of desktop, server, enterprise, and hosted (e.g., cloud) applications available, including their benefits and shortcomings avg STD Knowledge of selection queries {e.g., attribute, spatial, and location) avg STD

NSF: I - Corp - L Received a grant to explore a business model potentially for the GeoTech Center (some initial thoughts) Nearly 80 people have been Interviewed, either in person, video call or phone. From head of professional organizations to GIS Technicians. Using a 9 block Business Canvas

Some Initial Findings Provide study materials for those seeking personal growth and/or certification in geospatial technology. Materials requested include: study guide, practice questions for GISP Exam, a study book Most are willing to pay a fee for high quality materials Some would like to see test prep workshops Some would like to see GeoTech Center offer consulting (education & not for profit organizations)

Model Courses 10 model courses have been composed are free to download from the Center website. These courses are completely standalone or can be used as individual lessons. Crime Analysis Class in the works. Jefferson has developed a new certificate program composed of the contents from the model courses (Introduction, Intermediate, Remote Sensing, Web GIS, Programming for GIS). Additional new courses will be added at Jefferson in the fall of 2016 as well as new certificates and standalone GST degree. Data Management, Internship, Capstone, UAS.

National GeoTech Center Program Finder Map wer/index.html?id=ac39217c a0fa 1bb494d5fd

Syllabus Repository Contains syllabi at all levels Introductory Specialized courses Graduate courses Presented as given without any modifications

Learn on Demand Four of the Jefferson courses will be offered beginning in the fall in a Learn on Demand format. The model courses are the foundations for all Geospatial Courses at JCTC. All GST courses at JCTC are offered online.

A Time of Revolutionary Change Geospatial Standards GISP BOK for GEOINT Field Data Collection Unmanned Aerial Systems and Imagery Geospatial Technologist Automate Processes and Dynamic Map Creators Citizen Mappers using Open Source Software and Data Collection Time and Place Story Mapping Crowd Sourcing

Open Ended Questions in Geospatial Technology? Who will be map creators of the future? How will the creation of spatial data representation change? Who will be the data gathers? How will the geospatial community evolve? How will we meet this evolving and changing field? What will be role of the citizen mapper, technician, technologist and scientist? How or is surveying and mapping becoming more closely integrated

Questions and Hopefully Answers

How will Data Collection Change? Will everyone be able to do field data collection? How will data collection change the jobs of the geospatial technician workforce? Bad data means bad maps! Bad projections mean misrepresented information! Will we revert to paper maps for some field data collection? Who teaches the art of accurate sketching? Anyone with a GPS enabled smart device has the ability to become a data collector. How do we take secure data? What are the accuracy requirements? When do we need centimeter accuracy for a location of physical objects and when will a couple feet be just fine? Will Citizen Scientist be the first line field data collectors? Who will be the editors? Need to know now! Live data Mapping? How does Google know when traffic is slow? Crowd Sourcing?

Esri Collector Field Data Collection with Smart Device Requires a GPS enabled smart device (non-windows) Esri ArcGIS Online Account GeoODK (Google associated product) Fulcrum PDF Maps from Avenza

Field Data Collection Examples Historical Markers Wineries Tree Survey for an Urban Heat Island Study Light Standards (poles) Analysis for citizen safety Civil War Data Collection

Will Unmanned Vehicles Change How Imagery/Data is Collected? The simple answer is yes, but it is not a simple solution, but the ramifications will huge. You must understand the FAA rules and regulations. FAA controls all air space! If you fly commercially you must have a FAA certified pilot. 400 feet height, 100 mph, 500 feet from people, visible sight of vehicle. Hobbyist Students can be considered Hobbyist, but the instructors are consider commercial.

Types Fixed Wing Cover large distances Multi-rotator Stable platform

Payload In general talking a few kilograms!

Sensors Video Still images 4 band Thermal IR LiDAR?

Stitching Created using Microsoft ICE (Image Composite Editor), use Photosynth to display the image online.

Is the role of the Geospatial Technologist Changing? Redundant task will become automated solutions, through the use of coding. Is web based applications replacing desktop software? Is creation of dynamic maps in a relational database replacing static maps? Must the new technologist be versed in: Programming such as Python, html 5, css, Silverlight, Flex, Illustrator and SQL Cloud computing Is the line between GST and IT becoming blurred especially in small companies? As technicians?

Do I Really Need or Want to Learn Python? GIST is becoming more computerized! We are seeing a merging of components such as networking, programing, databases and geospatial tasks, which includes analysis Repetitive task need to be automated! Being a Python creator seems to be a whole new task, wouldn t it be simpler just to do the normal manual process? How is Python used throughout geospatial technology? Multiple platforms use Python, but they use different libraries and versions. Python automation process creator is the role of the geospatial technician not a Python programmer! The technician is using short code to automate processes, extensive code is a programmer job.

Open Source vs Enterprise! Is there a place for Open Source Software in a production environment? Open Source does not mean FREE. Can a complete GIS system be developed only on Open Source platform? Desktop Software QGIS Mapbox Mapbox Studio CartoDB Servers Connect an ArcGIS Server to QGIS Free, but have not tested them. Data when should you connect to a service? Base maps such as Open Street Map What are the advantage of Commercial Software?

Open Source Maps Open Street Map is the Wikipedia of Mapping! Who curates it? The Cartography of Open Street Map can be changed by the user, for the user s needs. It can be edited in ArcMap! Using Open Street Map as your base layers gives the designer the ability to modify both the basemap and the production layers.

Open Street Map Old Location of Farmer s Market New Location of Farmer s Market

Story Maps Bringing together writing, photography and spatial technologies. On maps we produce we try to make them descriptive, many times they don t tell the full story, because of some of the physical limitations. Story maps can combine photographic elements, written text, historical timelines, compare and contrast features. Esri has several templates that can be used with little coding. Google Tour and Knightslab are two other good examples of story maps.
