Using ArcGIS Server to Bring Geospatial Analysis and Mapping to non-gis Analysts ESRI Health User Conference September 22, 2009 Jim Laramie, Altarum Institute Sam Wang, Altarum Institute
Agenda Agenda Problem Solution Geo Dashboard GAT CMAT Examples Way Ahead Problem Statement Solution Geographic Analysis Dashboard Geographic Analysis Tool (GAT) Custom Market Area Tool (CMAT) Example Uses The Way Ahead
Problem Statement Agenda Problem Solution Geo Dashboard GAT CMAT Examples Way Ahead Understanding access and other health care issues influenced by geography is difficult for most health care organizations Barriers include the need for specialized software and staff with advanced training in GIS Managers and analysts usually have to work with a GIS specialist whenever a question involving geography or the need to produce a map arises These barriers typically limit the use of GIS as a research or analytical tool to a minor and sub-optimal role in most organizations
Solution Agenda Problem Solution Geo Dashboard GAT CMAT Examples Way Ahead We are beginning to address this problem with the Altarum Geographic Analysis Dashboard (GAD) The Altarum GAD is a take off of a ArcGIS Server based system called the MCFAS Geographic Analysis Dashboard (GAD) that we developed last year for the DoD/TRICARE Managment Activity (TMA) Look and feel modified to reflect Altarum Institute DoD proprietary data has been removed Numerous enhancements are being made to enhancement the upload features, analytical, and display capability Access restricted to authorized project staff, to authorized project data We are using the GAD and associated drive-time data to support various clients and internal Institute R&D and Mission Project activities
Altarum Geographic Analysis Dashboard Agenda Problem Solution Geo Dashboard GAT CMAT Examples Way Ahead The GAD currently contains two Geospatial Tools GAT is a generalized map production and geospatial analysis tool CMAT is a specialized tool for creating ZIP Code-based drive-time or distance based market areas
Altarum Geographic Analysis Tool (GAT) Agenda Problem Solution Geo Dashboard GAT CMAT Examples Way Ahead Of the two tools, GAT is the most generally applicable to the widest audience KEY - is how easy it is for non-gis analysts to upload data from their desktop for mapping and analysis Data by ZIP Code, County, State, or Country may be uploaded from a host of file formats including Excel, Access, text, csv, xml) We will be adding additional geographic keys for uploading data
Uploading and Configuring Data Agenda Problem Solution Geo Dashboard GAT CMAT Examples Way Ahead You control the look and feel of your upload data and map configuration For each column of data your may set color ramping number of class breaks type of classification break (e.g., natural, quartile, equal) You may save uploaded data and map configurations for future use
Map Layer Control Agenda Problem Solution Geo Dashboard GAT CMAT Examples Way Ahead Traditional (plus project-specific) geospatial base data layers are pre-loaded for easy map production It is easy to turn labels on/off, change layer symbology and transparency Base Layer Name US Hospitals VHA Facilities US Interstates US Major Highways World Lakes Counties States TRICARE Region World Countries Urban and Rural Areas Airport Boundaries Airports Census Block Groups Census Tracts US Cities Congressional Districts MSAs US Railroads US Water Areas US Water Lines Major World Cities
Map Layer Control Agenda Problem Solution Geo Dashboard GAT CMAT Examples Way Ahead Standard GIS toolbar functions make map navigating easy
Geospatial Analysis Functions Agenda Problem Solution Geo Dashboard GAT CMAT Examples Way Ahead Standard geospatial functions plus a custom MHS query tool enhance analytical l capabilities Buffering and clip functions Restricting to MTFs of Interest 100 mile Buffer Example: ZIP Codes Within 100 miles of Camp Lejeune
MCFAS Custom Market Area Tool (CMAT) Agenda Problem Solution Geo Dashboard GAT CMAT Examples Way Ahead CMAT is a specialized tool for creating ZIP Code-based distance and drive-time market areas for ANY locations in the US U.S. Provides extremely fast response time as distance and drive-time between all ZIP Code pairs in the U.S. has been pre-computed Distances up to 125 miles and associated drive-times between ZIP Code population centroids Results may be exported in text or Excel format Underlying ZIP Code pairs drive-time data base available independent d of the CMAT
Example Uses of GAD Agenda Problem Solution Geo Dashboard GAT CMAT Examples Way Ahead TRICARE Network Evaluation Understanding Drive-time vs Distance Health Atlas Maps Patient Policy Care/Enrollment Implementation Pattern Analysis Analysis T3 PSAs
