Necessity is the mother of invention.

What is a culture? A way of life; the pattern of people s knowledge, skills, and beliefs. What makes people know, do and believe certain things?

A culture s development is dependent upon its ability to adapt to or modify their geography. What does this mean?

adapt- 1. to change (oneself) to meet particular circumstances. 2. to alter or change to meet new requirements.

Let s review the 5 characteristics that make up the geography of a 1. Climate 2. Landforms 3. Location 4. Natural vegetation 5. Natural resources place: If a group of people cannot learn to survive using the geography around them, that group of people will die off.

Following are three slides of different environments. Imagine what your life might be like if you lived in each environment (geography).

Imagine that you lived in the desert. Describe your... housing. food. clothing.

Imagine that you lived in the arctic. Describe your... housing. food. clothing.

Imagine that you lived in the Piney Woods. Describe your... housing food clothing

We will be studying the Native Americans of Texas. These cultures will be shaped by their geography. Each group had to adapt to their geography for their very survival. One major concept you need to understand is the difference between the CULTURES and the TRIBES. Think of it like this: The CULTURE is like a book. The TRIBE is like a chapter in that book. Plains Culture Comanche Apache Kiowa

There are four Native American culture groups in Texas. Southeastern mostly in the Piney Woods, Post Oak Belt, Cross Timbers Gulf Mostly in the Gulf Coast Plains and the South Texas Plains Pueblo Mostly in the Mountains and Basins Region (along the Rio Grande) Plains Mostly in the Great Plains and North Central Plains and some Coastal Plains Tribes within a culture group are similar because they live in the same environment. However, the four culture groups are different because the geography of Texas is diverse.

So, what are these Native American Cultures and where did they live? Well On your Cultural Adaptation Handout, find the following regions or sub-regions and label each of them 1. Piney Woods, Post Oak Belt and Cross Timbers 2. Gulf Coast Plains and South Texas Plains 3. High Plains, Edwards Plateau, Grand Prairie, Blackland Prairie, Rolling Plains, Llano Basin 4. Mountains and Basins Now, color all the sub-regions the following way: Color all the sub-regions listed for #1 Green Color all the sub-regions listed for #2 Blue Color all the sub-regions listed for #3 Red ******Stop!!!!Wait!!!!! See those two little extra pockets in the Mountains and Basins? Color those two little pockets Brown.******* Color the region listed for #4 Red Now, color the boxes that you wrote the Culture names in the same color as the map. This will serve as your key. Thanks!.

Plains Who live mostly in the Great Plains and North Central Plains (and some Mountains and Basins) High Plains Rolling Plains Southeastern Who live mostly in the Piney Woods and oak forests Mountains & Basins Pueblo Who live mostly in the Mountains and Basins along the Rio Grande Edwards Plateau Llano Basin South Texas Plains Gulf Coast Plains Piney Woods Gulf Who live mostly in the Gulf Coast Plains and South Texas Plains

Your FlemingWorld Assignment is to: Get with a partner (or two) and write down as many natural resources as you can for each of the regions or sub-regions (you have 3 minutes) Ready???? Go! Let s discuss

Now, your job is to SURVIVE in each particular region or sub-region. You will need the following to survive: 1. Shelter 2. Food 3. Clothing The FlemingWorld Rules are that you can ONLY use the natural resources that we came up with to survive. What are you going to make your house out of? Clothes? What are you going to eat? NO FUNNY STUFF!!!! No aliens, magic, or purple skies raining yellow butterflies!!! You solutions must be realistic! You will work in groups and write out what you will use for each of the above mentioned necessities. You will also need to create a halfdecent sketch of your necessity. Some of you will present these creations to class in 10 minutes!!!! Ready???? Go!

Look at the map on your student page and complete the following: 1. Use the next slide to fill in the Native American group locations. 2. Use four colors to fill in your map key. 3. Use the following colors (you will find out why later): Plains = red, Southeastern = green, Gulf = blue, Pueblo = brown The groups on the slide are color coded according to culture groups, so use it as your guide.
