EMODnet High Resolution Seabed Mapping - further developing and providing a high resolution digital bathymetry for European seas EGU Fall 2017 meeting New Orleans USA, December 2017 Schaap Dick MARIS, dick@maris.nl
European Marine Observation and Data network Initiative by EU DG MARE for EMODnet in 2008: EU communication MARINE KNOWLEDGE marine data and observation for smart and sustainable growth promotes capture data once use many times The EU Blue Growth communication considers ocean and marine data as important input for driving scientific and economic developments Focus on generic European marine data products for different domains: bathymetry, geology, biology, chemistry, physics, seabed habitats, coastal mapping, and human activities Use of standards is of vital importance 2
European Marine Observation and Data network Central portal Thematic portals for physics, biology, geology, bathymetry, chemistry, seabed habitas and human activities Checkpoints for analysing fitness for purpose 3
EMODnet High Resolution Seabed Mapping - Objectives To bring together bathymetric surveys of European seas and to produce, publish and serve a harmonised and medium resolution Digital Terrain Model of all European seas providing harmonized discovery and access to bathymetry data publishing a multi-resolution Digital Terrain Model of the seabed topography publishing a standard European coastline and baseline data maintaining the EMODnet Bathymetry web portal allowing easy access of the data and data products supporting interoperability (INSPIRE) and with organisations from outside EU providing user and machine-to-machine services Ongoing in 4 consecutive projects since 2009 with expanding consortium 4
Present Consortium 5
Standards are instrumental Adoption of SeaDataNet standards and infrastructure Common Data Index (CDI) service based upon ISO metadata standard for bathymetric data sets (surveys) Sextant products catalogue based upon ISO for composite DTMs Controlled vocabularies for the marine domain (> terms and > 60 lists), with international governance and web services Common SeaDataNet Data Policy and SeaDataNet License Adoption of OGC WMS, WFS, and WCS services for machine-to-machine services 6
Process flow Population of SeaDataNet CDI and Sextant services Common method and GLOBE software used by all involved Data pre-gridded by data providers Regional Basin Coordinators generate Regional DTMs DTM Integrator compiles the resulting EMODnet DTM 7
GLOBE software Norwegian and Icelandic seas Arctic example 8
Regional DTM production - example Atlantic near Iberian peninsula Average depth for the interpolated DTM (using survey data & CDTM s) Resulting DTM with average depth after GEBCO integration and smoothing 9
Data gathering results Up till today, survey CDI metadata records from 38 data centres from 18 countries and 240 data originators from 1816 to 2017 have been collated and imported into the dedicated EMODnet Bathymetry CDI data discovery and access service. The SeaDataNet Data Products Catalogue service (Sextant) gives 114 metadata records about composite DTMs 10
DTM releases in time May 2010: first release of EMODnet DTM for selected European seas - 1/4 * 1/4 arc minutes June 2011: second release of EMODnet DTM for more European seas - 1/4 * 1/4 arc minutes August 2012: third release of EMODnet DTM for more European seas - 1/4 * 1/4 arc minutes August 2013: fourth release of EMODnet DTM - 1/4 * 1/4 arc minutes February 2015: fifth release of EMODnet DTM now covering all European seas - 1/8 * 1/8 arc minutes September 2015: sixth release of EMODnet DTM now covering all European seas - 1/8 * 1/8 arc minutes + 3 pilot coastal areas with high resolution DTMs October 2016: seventh release of EMODnet DTM based upon > 7700 surveys and Composite DTMs Mid 2018 (planned): eight release of EMODnet DTM with 1/16 * 1/16 arc minutes, including coastal zones, and parts with higher resolution where possible 11

Ongoing activities Gathering and populating more data sets Expanding North to include the Barents Sea and synergy with IBCAO Expanding DTM including coastal areas Increasing overall resolution to 1/16 * 1/16 arc minutes and in coastal zones DTMs with higher resolution (where possible) Including alternative data sources (Satellite Derived Bathymetry) Determining best European coastline, also using European tidal model for vertical referencing Introducing 3D viewing in the browser, using Cesium and own TIN model 22
Determing European coastline At different tidal levels using the Deltares Global Tide Surge Model (GTSM) version 2 (Coastal areas (5 km resolution); Open oceans (50 km resolution)); grid refinement for capturing better the topography in coastal waters: 1.25km at European coasts and 2.5km at other coasts. Recalibration is ongoing. Using coastal data from multibeam, lidar and satellite (Sentinel and LandSat) 23
