3 About the CPC Spatial Analysis Unit The Spatial Analysis Unit of the Carolina Population Center (CPC) assists Faculty Fellows, Postdoctoral Scholars and Predoctoral Trainees affiliated with the Center in the incorporation of spatial perspectives and geospatial data into their research agenda. Such assistance includes consultation for proposal development and implementation of cutting-edge analytical methodologies, training in the use of GPS receivers for primary data collection and advanced GIS software for analysis, creation of maps for posters and publications, development of fully integrated spatial databases, and the incorporation of complex spatial analyses to further research goals. The SAU provides a unique set of research services to the CPC research community and the Unit effectively links to other research cores at the CPC, in addition to collaborating units on campus and organizations at other institutions. 4 Services The Spatial Analysis Unit has a long history of providing analytical and consultative assistance to affiliated faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and predoctoral trainees at the Carolina Population Center. Staff not only perform spatial data management and implement spatial analyses, but also provide guidance in the proper use of geospatial data and methodologies. The SAU s services can be broken down into eight categories, which are described on the following pages. Spatial analysts have an average of 14 years of experience with spatial digital technologies and geospatial analyses, as well as wide-ranging expertise in population-related topics, including fertility, mortality, migration, health care accessibility, disease ecology, and human interactions with the biophysical and built environments. 5 Consultation for Proposal Development and Ongoing Research Spatial Analysis Unit Faculty Advisors, Steve Walsh and Paul Voss, and Unit Manager, Brian Frizzelle, are available to assist with proposal development, from initial conceptualization to project completion, including planning, budgeting and analytical implementation. In addition, the Unit Manager and staff provide consultative services in the ongoing design and refinement of advanced spatial analytic techniques, recommending innovative approaches that are methodologically sound and cost effective. Spatial Analysis staff also work closely with the CPC Systems & User Services staff on planning in such areas as hardware and software budgeting and acquisition. An important area of increasing concern is the security of confidential spatial data. Many projects led by CPC investigators or analyzed by researchers affiliated with the Center collect locations of individual respondents, and these data are stored on secure servers with restricted access. These protections ensure that the confidentiality of respondents and the assurances given to institutional IRBs are maintained. If your project has such requirements, guidance can be provided on how to best preserve confidentiality and still use your data to their fullest potential. The SAU helped launch my career. They assisted my growth as an academic, initially creating simple distance variables between individuals and food venues, to encouraging more complex agent-based modeling. Whether I need a visually stimulating map for a presentation, or I need to think through the complexities of how individuals move through space and time, the SAU has never shied away from assisting with cutting edge research. - Barbara Laraia, Former CPC Fellow 3
6 Spatial Database Development A critical component of any spatial analytical approach is a well-designed and usable spatial database. SAU staff have extensive experience in the development of spatial databases. The Spatial Analysis Unit provides a number of standard services that include, but are not limited to, the incorporation of secondary data sources into a standardized database structure through map scanning and digitization, aerial photo interpretation, satellite image processing, and the acquisition and cleaning of data from public sources and commercial providers. Analysts routinely evaluate data sources and advise researchers on their appropriateness and limitations, and implement the data development efforts. The Unit also provides support in three specialized areas of data development (see following pages). 4
7 Primary Data Collection in the Field Unit staff can assist with the design of survey instruments for primary data collection initiatives that include a spatial component. Services include the development of procedures, training plans and materials, documentation for the use of GPS units, rangefinders, and other mapping equipment, and production of field maps for use during data collection. Analysts can train project members on field data collection and quality control procedures, as well as participate in fieldwork. The CPC Spatial Analysis Unit is one of a kind in this country. The SAU staff are extremely well trained in spatial analysis, spatial database creation and management, as well as satellite image processing. 8 Contextual Data Linkages The CPC spatial unit has allowed us to created data sets linking longitudinally food prices and many measures of the built environment to two largescale national data bases. They are unique nationally in their ability to work with us on such large-scale efforts. - Barry Popkin, CPC Fellow and W.R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Nutrition One strength of the Spatial Analysis Unit is the use of GPS, address geocoding, map digitizing, or other positioning methods to tie individuals or features of interest to absolute locations and thereby link them to other contextual information with georeferencing identifiers. Staff are experienced with making these linkages and the associated quality control procedures for ensuring their validity. 6
9 Remote Sensing Data Acquisition Aerial and satellite-borne sensors are rich sources of data, especially for research applications in population and environment. If you would like to consider utilizing these data in your research, SAU staff will provide guidance in the selection of the appropriate remote sensor type for measuring the phenomena of interest, as well as locate and obtain data from government and commercial providers, and process and prepare the raw data for further analysis. 10 Spatial Analyses and Measurements The Spatial Analysis Unit uses a variety of state-ofthe-art GIS and image processing software packages to manage, display and analyze spatial data. The software are complimented with custom programming when the built-in tools cannot accomplish the tasks. SAU analysts have extensive experience with very large datasets. Examples of analyses that are commonly requested by investigators include Euclidean and network distance calculations, travel time measurements, spatial density estimations, spatial buffering and proximity analyses, point pattern analyses, geostatistical interpolations and spatial pattern metrics. Spatial analysts will work with you to design, develop, implement, document and archive analytical strategies appropriate to your research. 8
11 Remotely Sensed Image Analysis Spatial Analysis Unit staff utilize traditional and innovative software and methods for the analysis of remotely sensed imagery. Traditional approaches include pixelbased land cover classification, land use and land cover change, and the development of derivative products and indices (e.g. vegetation indices, moisture indices, and biophysical measures of vegetative health). Innovative cutting-edge approaches include the extraction of highly detailed land cover information from hyperspectral imagery and the use of object-based image analysis (OBIA) software to classify land use and land cover at the scale of the homogeneous landscape patch. Analysts will work with you to determine which methods are best suited to your needs and your budget. 12 The CPC Spatial Analysis Unit worked with us to create an unprecedented, community environment database derived from GIS, which we have linked to individual respondent locations for two large, US national, longitudinal, and populationbased surveys. This diverse and detailed database includes data ranging from food prices to crime rates to land use at a finegrain geographic level heretofore unavailable in population-based studies. The SAU dealt with major issues related to deductive disclosure that allow these data to be publicly released. We truly would not have been able to create this database anywhere but CPC. - Penny Gordon-Larsen, CPC Fellow and Associate Professor of Nutrition Spatially Explicit Simulation Modeling An important area of innovation in many research fields is the development of spatially explicit models. The Spatial Analysis Unit has developed these types of models to study relationships between population, land use, and the environment. Two types of spatial simulation models are in use within the Spatial Analysis Unit: cellular automata (CA) and agent-based models (ABM). These models can be used in many different research settings, and we will work with you to decide which model style will best answer your research questions. SAU staff have over twelve years of collective experience with the programming tools used to code these models, and will assist you in their design, development, and execution. 10
13 Spatial Statistics The field of spatial statistics deals with the statistical analysis of data that are tied to spatial locations. With spatial statistics, the observations usually are not independent, and thus standard statistical assumptions do not apply. However, the addition of spatial statistics allows researchers to understand and minimize parameter biases that are caused simply by proximity to one another. Spatial variables and analysis have become increasingly important in the population field, and the Carolina Population Center s Spatial Unit has the expertise to facilitate the research needs of UNC population researchers. - Ron Rindfuss, CPC Fellow & Professor of Sociology The Spatial Analysis Unit uses standard and specialized statistics software packages to run spatial statistical analyses. SAU staff and faculty advisors are happy to advise you in the use of spatial statistics in your research. Tobler s First Law of Geography: Everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things. 11
14 If a picture is worth a thousand words, a map is worth a few more. I ve used maps to display geographic differences in demographic characteristics and geographic variation in public policies. The SAU provides critical assistance in producing maps which can have a high visual impact in papers and presentations. - Krista Perreira, CPC Fellow and Associate Professor of Public Policy Cartographic Design and Visualization Spatial Analysis Unit staff can assist you with the design and creation of maps for field data collection, validation of data and analyses, and presentation of results. All spatial analysts are geographers trained in cartography, and can help you develop an innovative presentation of study results and data using the latest exploration and visualization tools. 12
15 Training One objective of the Spatial Analysis Unit is to help researchers develop the capacity for understanding the analytic potential of spatial data, tools and perspectives into their research. Training is a central part of this goal. Faculty and students can receive individual, specialized instruction on spatial analysis software tools and methodologies from our staff. Unit staff also conduct occasional workshops on topics of general interest, such as linking spatial and demographic data, basic GIS mapping and analysis, and GPS data collection. 13
