1 Final GIS Project Paper Libby Mahaffy Spring 2010 Overview of the project For the final project in GIS I plan to do a site suitability analysis for the development of ecovillages in Marquette County, an area located in Michigan s Upper Peninsula. I will be exploring the constraints of and/or attractors to a piece of land that could be an ecovillage site. Given the requirements of existing ecovillages, the following questions will be asked: 1) What are physical constraints to development of ecovillages? 2) What are physical facilitative factors for development of ecovillages? For an ecovillage to be sited successfully, it must: Be able to be built in the first place not on barren land, in water/wetlands, in conservation/protected land. Be on a buildable grade Be close to roads that are maintained and passable throughout the year Be close to the markets, services, and employment opportunities of population centers as well as accessible to potential visitors Be able to fulfill the educational mission of the ecovillage, potentially serving as a satellite eco-campus Data sources The analysis required the following data sources. USGS Land use/land cover Current land use/land cover from the National Land Cover Database. Downloaded from Land cover/land use from USGS National Landcover data set (NLCD) legend: Metadata: C&YMAX= &YMIN= &XMIN= &XMAX= Digital Elevation Model Metadata:

2 In order to create a hillshade and to calculate slope, it was necessary to download Digital Elevation data from USGS. Digital Elevation Model downloaded from USGS at GIS lab M:/ drive Census 2000 population by block. Ducks Unlimited Conservation And Recreation Lands (CARL) vector dataset. Downloaded from Metadata is included in the zip file of information. Unable to find date other than publication date from Michigan Geographic Data Library All roads from Marquette County. Based on the 1994 U.S. Census Bureau based TIGER line files. According to the metadata, the scale is 1:24,000. Non-seasonal roads were selected for using the TIGER/Line File Census Feature Class Codes (CFCC). As the impassibility of seasonal roads is an issue in northern Michigan, I selected from all road classes the roads that would be largest and most well-maintained in the winter months, which were categories A2 and A3, Primary Road Without Limited Access and Secondary and Connecting Road, respectively. (No class A1 roads exist in Marquette County.) Downloaded from All+Roads+%28v9b%29 Metadata: Michigan County Boundaries From the Census This will be used for the reference map of the entire state and to clip the other layers to for analysis. Metadata found in the zip file: boundaries_2000&outputformat=shape-zip Reference USA Educational institutions. Using NAICS codes for educational institutions, I was able to geocode elementary, middle, high, trade, and alternative education schools, as well as colleges and universities within Marquette county through ReferenceUSA at

3 Analysis steps The following are the steps I took in order to prepare my data for analysis and then the actual site suitability analysis I conducted. 1) Not all of the data was in the same coordinate system, so it was necessary to put it all into NAD_1983_StatePlane_Michigan_North_FIPS_2111. This required in all cases to export the data using the reference of the data frame. 2) I selected Marquette county and exported it as a layer in order to clip all of the datasets to be within the Marquette county dataframe. 3) I selected the counties surrounding Marquette to use as a mask in the final maps 4) For land use and for CARL, I recalculated the area of the land use types for the new size (I didn t end up using this in my analysis, but it was good to learn the tool). 5) Then I went through and set the geoprocessing environment settings, following the tip sheet. 6) First I enabled Spatial Analyst and then went to the toolbar to set the Spatial Analyst Options LC_Mq_clip is the land cover dataset clipped to Marquette County.

4 7) After I set the Spatial Analyst Options I was ready to do the meat of my analysis 8) I created housing and population density maps using the census 2000 points. 9) I calculated the distance to roads within 3-mile increments (converted into meters) 10) Next I geocoded the addresses I generated from Reference USA for educational institutions to the streets layer. 11) Then, using Network Analyst, I calculated distance from points along the road network.

5 12) Then converted the polygons that were created with network analyst into a raster dataset.

6 13) Slope was determined using Spatial Analyst Surface Analysis. DEM_30 is the Digital Elevation raster dataset. 14) Since CARL was a vector dataset, I changed it to raster based on the ownership of the land using Spatial Analyst. I chose ownership as the criteria because it was interesting to me, not because it added anything to the current analysis. It could be used in further analysis to determine suitability. 15) The next steps after all of the initial maps were complete were the reclassification steps. 16) I first reclassified the input layers into integer values on a scale of 1-5, 1 being least suitable, 5 being most suitable. There were variables that could have been 2 or 3, so I used my own judgment to determine their suitability based on my knowledge of the needs of ecovillages.

7 17) I reclassified the distance to educational institutions layer, slope layer, population density layer, and the distance to roads layer all on a 1 to 5 scale. Immediately below is an example of the roads layer in the process of reclassification, and below that is the land cover reclassification I completed for my own notes NoData NoData NoData NoData

8 18) The second reclassification was to omit water, wetlands, barren land, and conservation and recreation lands as options for places to build. I did this by giving those values a value of 0 and all other values a value of 1. 19) I then performed two functions in Raster Calculator. I first weighted all of the input layers and multiplied them together. The completed maps of Marquette County I will have are the following tier one maps: 1) Land cover/land use raster 2) Distance from major roads -- raster 3) Kernel population density and/or housing density per square mile -- raster 4) Conservation and recreation land by owner - raster 5) Slope raster 6) Distance by road to educational institutions in the area -- raster I will have the following tier 2 maps: 1) Distance to schools reclassified 2) Distance to roads reclassified 3) Slope reclassified 4) Distance to population centers reclassified 5) Land cover/use reclassified

9 Tier three maps: 1) Protected land reclassified 2) Water reclassified (part of Landcover) Difficulties There were a few hiccups along the way, but overall, with the help of Barbara and others in the class, I was able to overcome any problems. I encountered some problems with geocoding -- addresses didn t match but Barbara helped me to find the best match and also to use the x.y coordinates to match the addresses. This worked well and we found that my geocoding was actually more complete than what the GIS lab has on the M:/ drive! Marquette county doesn t exist within a vacuum, so realized to make this analysis complete I would need to take into account educational institutions in surrounding counties, as well as the road network that connects to Marquette county. Also, in a rural area you can t get to schools as the crow flies -- they have to be along roads, so straight line isn t the best measure for accessibility; Network Analyst turned out to be the best-suited tool, but it limited the overall final suitability. The biggest problem I encountered besides my own compulsiveness and how much longer I think something in GIS is going to take versus how long it actually takes was that I should have used Snagit in every single one of my steps. When I had gotten through the analysis and was inputting the reclassified data into the overall map and making the maps, I forgot what I had used to reclassify! I hadn t written down what my reclassification ranges were all I had was 1 5. A couple I remembered off the top of my head, but others I had to go all the way back to the beginning and redo it all. Future recommendations This was an incredibly time-consuming and rewarding process! Even though my poster has its faults, I m really proud of the work I put into it and of how much I learned in this class.

10 Advice To the next student to do a project like this: Using the work of others who have already gone through the process is extremely helpful! It is not cheating because you need to do everything yourself anyway with your own data, but just having that guide there is great support. Make sure that everything is in the right coordinate system before you do anything else. Be able to justify why you chose the weighting you did and the classification numbering that you chose. If you choose to weight variables 1 5, you need to be able to justify why a 1 is a 1 and a 5 is a five. What makes them least or most suitable? An important thing to remember also is that analysis could go on forever and you have to stop at some point. The goal of the assignment is not an exhaustive analysis but to prove that you know GIS and can use the software proficiently. To myself for next time: If I had more time I would do a few more things to the analysis to make it more robust. As it stands now, my analysis was clipped in such a way as to make it seem like Marquette county is an island, which it is not. I would geocode educational institutions not just in Marquette county but also in surrounding counties. I would also include I would make a density map of distance to water and protected land because those are areas that would be nice to be next to. I would assess tracts of land together because ecovillages need a certain amount of land to build and run. I would assess property cost because if the land is prohibitively expensive then it doesn t matter if the site would be perfect or not it can t be purchased to start one anyway. I would assess land use trends to see which areas are under greatest threat of traditional development I would assess the number of partnering organizations in the area, that is, the number of organizations that would help work with and further the objectives of the ecovillage. Annotated list of citations I reviewed four articles and looked at all past years site suitability posters to inform my own analysis and poster design. Thomas, Michael R. Pp DOI: /S This article deals with Michigan brownfields and how to prioritize them for remediation and redevelopment using a Brownfield Site Ranking Model. I found this article informative because it outlines (in table format), Brownfield site selection, weighting and ranking criteria and information requirements applied at the local (township, village, and city) level. 11 criteria are used to analyze appropriateness of the potential site.

Environmental Management. v. 28. no. 5. p DOI: /s This article chronicles the history of land use suitability analysis, from its beginnings with hand-drawn, sieve mapping through five distinct phases to where we are today in the artificial intelligence (!) stage. I found it interesting to see the history of this kind of analysis and to see all of the ways to think about the factors that go into site suitability, how to weight them, how to include them in the analysis, etc. Li, X. (2002) Habitat evaluation for crested ibis: A GIS-based approach. Ecological Research. v. 17. no. 5. p This article is about a bird found in Asia (crested ibis) that was thought to be extinct and then rediscovered in The researchers who published this article digitized different layers (e.g. roads, topography, vegetation, etc.) of the area where the bird was rediscovered and then gave them a suitability index and overlayed them to create a theory of where the bird might be found ( habitat quality ). Then they compared their map to the actual distribution of the crested ibis and found them to be highly correlated. The results and discussion were integrated into a 20-year protection plan for the species, including ways to reintroduce the species to its former native habitat. Emily Ladow Reynolds. (2007) Site Suitability Analysis for Agricultural Operations in Vermont: A demonstration of the weighted overlay raster analysis technique. The final source I m citing for this proposal is from a 2007 Intro to GIS student whose final project was about the site suitability for agriculture in Vermont. She used some of the same factors I ll be looking at for my project, including conservation land and current land cover/use. Because she did a site suitability analysis (which is what I m planning to do), her methodology and justification for weighting is most helpful to me. Her variables included: soils classification, public conservation land, access to major roads, population density, and land cover/land use.
