19 What types of maps should I cache? Cached service best for: Complex base maps and imagery Data that does not change frequently Non-cached (dynamic) services best for: Data that changes frequently Data layers rendered by attributes that change frequently Data that will be edited

20 Spatial Reference Need to consider before creating basemap Affects tiling schemes and map scales Options include: WGS 1984 (AGOL Today) Web Mercator (Google, Bing, AGOL Soon) State Plane/Local Projection (Your data) AGOL and Web Mercator tiling schemes and map scales provided in ArcGIS Server

21 Cartography Considerations It s s time for art class Cartography may impact data model You ll wrestle with symbolizing features Color, scale, symbols and text (labels/annotation) You ve got to do this work in ArcMap MXDs will get complex when structured by scale Many people can critique a map, but there aren t t many who can create a good one

22 Data Model Generalization of data may be required Additional attributes may be needed too Source data may be used in many layers and at different scales Changes to symbology or number of features being drawn If you re going to publish a dynamic map service, the data should be in the same coordinate system

23 Feature Symbolization Colors & Symbols Design for each scale level Plan for transitions between scales Use definition queries to control which features are being displayed Use contrast and color to define features Leave room for map overlays Use standard cartographic symbols Avoid complex symbols Try to keep things simple!

24 Feature Symbolization Labels & Annotation Design for each scale level Plan for space between labels Plan for transitions between scales Use color to associate with features Use standard fonts Use spacing to increase clarity Avoid serif fonts and effects (italics, halos, etc.) Use annotation if placement must be consistent
