5 International Boundaries - Evaluation of the processes and an methodology towards the improvement of the 1million dataset : - a research and development of a database on boundary status (delimitation and disputes) and treaties resources (for Africa), to be completed by January 2008 Many treaties for one country Sources are embedded in the db Treaties are stored - an evaluation of the accuracy of the source material for boundary delimitation (boundary evidences: UN Treaty, ICJ decisions, SALB...) for a set of borders Geocoordinates from UN treaty (Algeria Mali) Scanned maps from UN treaty (Mongolia China) -Updates on international boundaries datasets Geocoordinates from ICJ decisions (Niger Benin)

8 Other potential candidates for UNGIWG - Administrative Boundaries: the 2007 edition of the GAUL data set has been released in December This edition of the data set can be downloaded from the FAO Geonetwork node ( - DEM: NASA and METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, former MITI) of the Japanese Government announced that they will develop a global DEM data of 30 m interval with nominal 7 m accuracy (SD) and distribute it world wide, "free of charge." - Roads: UNJLC will be co-chairing the CODATA Working Group that is being proposed to steer the development of an 1:200'000 scale open source Global Roads database to be freely available to the humanitarian, environmental, developmental, and scientific communities ( - The digital global map of irrigation areas (GMIA): Collaborative ongoing effort since 1995 between the FAO and the Universität Frankfurt am Main combining irrigation statistics for sub-national units and geospatial information regarding the location and extent of irrigation schemes. ( - Rural population database (PMUR 2005): the latest version of the population database provided by LandScan is 2005 has been evaluated for consistency (UN pop data), standardised to the UN coastline.

9 New Release GAUL 2008 To be delivered in December countries have been updated 13 countries are now available also at third and fourth level 12 layers of time series are available from 1992 to The country boundaries are compliant with the latest version of the UNCS International Boundaries Map (November 2006) The coastal line is mostly compliant with the coast of the International Boundary map delivered by UNCS except for some countries (e.g. Timor-Leste) where it has been updated according to the satellite images (e.g. Landsat ETM).

18 New potential tasks, project and/or initiatives - Repository of information and, if possible, data regarding Geodatabases initiatives, projects...(to be attached to the UNGIWG web site) - updates regarding the development of Global landcover layer (e.g. Global forest resources assessment). - Having access to a global non projected (Geogrpahic projection) dataset of satellite images to be used for ground reference (uncompressed 15 m accuracy Landsat mosaics, MrSid/GeoTiff format, 8 TB of data) => Lorant has the tape containing the all database. - UN JLC activity to be moved to TG1?

19 07-08 Workplan - Task group TOR (task) - further develop the document and integrate other elements in line with UNSDI development - Criteria for selection of Core Geo-database candidates (task) - building on the already existing material (FAO data standards, publications) + content + policy - International borders (project) - Creation of boundary evidence datasets (from various sources of information including treaty Series from UN, International Court of Justice statements, International boundary studies encyclopedia, SALB) with accurate metadata on source of information - Generalization of these evidences to 1 million scale in order to implement and integrate in the international boundary layerintegration of the references of correction made on each boundary segment in its related attribute (source, date, status, signing countries ) Workload: 3 years/full time to cover Africa Asia Latin America - SALB (project) - continue on the same line than the one followed this past year trying to have the SALB data completed as soon as possible. - Coastline (task) - go more in deep in the analysis which has been done in order to determine which source of data to be used in the context of UNGIWG

21 The African Water Resource Database The African Water Resource Database (AWRD) is a set of data and customdesigned tools, combined in a GIS analytical framework aimed at facilitating responsible inland aquatic resource management with a specific focus on inland fisheries and aquaculture. 22 AWRD data archive AWRD archive is comprised of 153 unique data layers representing 4.7 Gb of data. Main data categories (continental and national level datasets) are: Surface water bodies; Watersheds; Aquatic species; Rivers; Political boundaries; Population density; Soils; Satellite imagery and many other physiographic and climatological data types. In general, the source scale of these data support analyses from 1: to 1: for vector data, and a nominal resolution of 1 to 5 kilometers for raster data. 23 AWRD GIS-based tools To display and analyse the archival data, AWRD also contains a large assortment of new custom applications and tools programmed to run under version 3 of the ArcView GIS software environment (ArcView 3.x). 24 Marine Fisheries Core GIS Datasets and Applications FAO Major Fishing Areas and subdivisons Regional Fisheries Bodies Areas of Competence Fishing Activity Simulation Tool has been developed as an extension for the ESRI ArcView GIS Software.
