7 GIS Implementation: Story Map Shortlist Allowed for organization of multiple independent experiences Accessible to all the students in the course Featured spatial, photographic, and narrative elements

8 Dr. Tong Cheng BIO 136: Introduction to Human Disease Includes a survey of epidemiology Uses CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) data, such as: MMWR (Morbidity and Motility Weekly Report) Traditional data visualization: Line/bar graphs, charts Limitations Lack of visual linkage of disease occurrences to geographic locations Cannot make further inferences based on current data

9 Advantages of GIS: Reveals trends and interrelationships that are difficult to intuitively discover in a tabular format Allows the integration of diseasespecific information and other social or environmental data sets such as population, urbanization, poverty, health service provision, climate etc. Source: CDC

11 Projects: Harper Geospatial Data Portal: Map template Aggregated data Tabular Geospatial vector and raster Interdisciplinary ArcGIS Online Map Exercises Initially for World Regional Geography (GEG 101) Students build 10 maps over the course of the semester Each successive map builds upon previous maps At the end of the semester, students create a final project map on their own using portal data Faculty GIS Course For faculty without prior GIS experience GIS fundamental: coordinate systems, projections, data prep and cleaning, layers, cartography basics, basic queries etc.
