International Workshop: The Everyday Life of Multi-Local Families. Concepts, Methods and the Example of Post-Separation Families 20 th - 21 st October 2011, Munich, Germany Mobile relations, mobile shadows. Understanding contemporary urban daily living through shadowing techniques Research Project FONDECYT N «Urban daily mobility and urban social exclusion in Santiago de Chile» Paola Jirón and Susana Cortés Instituto de la Vivienda - Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo - Universidad de Chile pjiron@uchile.cl

Presentation Content Research Project: Context and complexity Mobile spatialities Shadowing as an ethnographic technique Cases: Sylvia Gladys Interdependent mobility Final remarks

Research Objectives > Identify, describe and compare the forms in which inhabitants of Santiago access diverse activities, relations and places through their practices of urban daily mobility. > Analyse the existing relation between urban daily mobility practices carried out by inhabitants of the city of Santiago and the patterns of inequality and social exclusion.

Complexity of Urban Relations Today Complex Dynamic Transformation Multi-locality Problems to apprehend urban relations today Double challenge: Accessing time space experience Intricate relations

Mobile Spatialities Space/spatiality Social and material aspects Time space How to map the spatiality of movement To apprehend these, new research methods are required

Research Method Ethnographic approach to daily mobility, main tool: shadowing Trying to map spatiality of movement: emotions, corporality, materiality, trajectories, meanings, stretegies. Importance of revealing not only that inequality and exclusion exist, but also, how it this inequality and exclusion take place

Shadowing as a research tool to apprehend mobile spatialities Mobile ethnographies Shadowing Method Training ethnographers Building shared body of knowledge Case selection Access to cases Interviewing, Maps, timetables, Becoming the Shadow How and what to observe Producing collective ethnographies Carrying out collective analysis Codification process Hypothesis making Shadowing mobile spatial practices: Advantages Disadvantages

As I arrive at Sylvia s house she s already waiting for me, she told me to arrive at 8:00 am, but when I get there, I realize her children are not there, she said she dropped them off early today, and she was now ready to go back to school. She has organized Matias s, her younger son, first class trip We drive along the gated communities that are almost imperceptible from the road except for the distinguishing gates that indicate their existence.

We then drive through fields, warehouses, small shops and toll paying highways and in less than 15 minutes we enter a large yellow factory that has no signage but has three large buildings. All the children come out of the cars and someone comes out to welcome us. All the mothers come along to the visit, to check out the chocolate, vanilla and lemon biscuits, their fillings and special treats.

Although the drives are not long at all, the whole day has been used up carrying school children around. But Sylvia says this is her only day, and that today was a tough one, but she doesn t mind as the rest of the days this responsibility is carefully distributed with the other mothers who take turn in picking up the children.

Interdependent Mobility > Household members and networks mobilities > Co dependency and interdependency > Types of relationships > Indivisible relations > Mobility articulates relations/networks > Positions within networks > Interdependence and social, economic, cultural conditions. > Interdependence and Gender > Interdependence and Life cycle > Interdependent networks generate asymmetrical relations > Gender relations and identity constitution > Socioeconomic differences and interdependence > Interdependence observed from a mobility point of view > Reveal new forms of generating, expressing and maintaining networks

Final Remarks Ethnographic approach useful to apprehend interdependent mobility practices in urban space Results are context specific Interdependent mobility is a characteristic of current times urban relations Approach unveils other phenomena: labour flexibility, women and labour, gender relations, women s overburdening roles Methodologically: unveiling of life Possible future applications: deeper ethnography, larger networks What happens when networks fail?
