FINAL YEAR PRESENTATION USE OF GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGY IN SUITABILITY ANALYSIS FOR NEW SITES OF MULTI-LEVEL CAR PARKING AREAS PRESENTED BY JASPHER OTIENO SUPERVISOR DR.NYIKA
Contents Overview Area of study Problem Statement Methodology Results and Analysis Conclusions Recommendations
objectives Main Objective To develop a GIS based site suitability mapfor a multi- level car park in an urban setting. Specific Objectives To generate a transport Network map for the Nairobi CBD To develop Geodatabase for car park facilities within area of interest To develop a network Model from which closest facilities in relation to incidents and service area of these facilities will be evaluated hotspots to the facilities
Background Information The region hosts the highest number of International Conferences in Africa and therefore receives the highest number of visitors both foreign and domestic. The city's core is experiencing the highest level of immigration resulting into very high pressure on the carrying capacity of physical and social infrastructure. The Nairobi Decongestion plan include the removal of onstreet parking at the following locations Moi Avenue, Tom Mboya street, Muindi Mbingu street, koinange street, Harambee Avenue, River Road, Kirinyaga Road, Haile Selassie Avenue. it is said that approximately 1.5 million passengers make their way to the central CBD and Industrial area daily Multi-level mechanized parking is a common feature in most developed countries, offering solutions especially in areas with minimal development space
Problem Statement Nairobi is the worlds Fourth-Most congested City according to a 2011 Survey The CBD is experiencing high traffic congestion problems due to inadequate car parking facilities. High demand for parking facilities in the CBD is a function of inefficient public transport system that has encouraged dependence on private transport and rapidly increased car ownership. It is also expected that following the proposed closure of on street parking, traffic congestion in the CBD will give way to the introduction of a rapid bus transit system that will hasten the efficient flow of traffic within, across and out of the City. Most of the roads that were initially fast pace seems to currently short time parking Traffic Congestion has resulted unproductive employees due to stress, fuel wastage and ozone pollution
TYPES OF CAR PARKING a) On street Parking on county roads b) Off street Parking lots on land owned by the County c) Basement parking lots in City Hall & City Hall Annexed. A majority of the parking space currently is surface parking. The drawback of surface parking is that it underutilizes available land. The Nairobi City County is desirous to improve parking situation in the Nairobi Central Business District area by developing efficient parking facilities NCC has proposed to take up Development of Mixed Use Integrated Commercial and Multi Level Parking Infrastructure on LR No. 209/11637 along Taifa Road, Nairobi in the City of Nairobi on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer basis.

The map shows Major Roads, open Parking lots and Muitilevel parking lot facility. Nairobi CBD transport network consist of Major Roads, Parking lots,multi-level parking facilities and bus terminus. In coming up with other new sites,it is important to consider already existing open air parking lots which are also candidate site for the development of new facility

Conclusions As land in metropolitan Cities like Nairobi becoming smaller convectional parking is proving infeasible. The solution for parking requirements is the Multi-level car parking systems to maximize car parking capacity by utilizing vertical space The results obtained from the study indicate that the integration of GIS and application of Multi-Criteria Evaluation could provide a superior database and guide map for decision makers considering suitable areas for new developments The study brings about the
Recommendations Its is Recommended that the approach in this study can be used for suitability analysis for any other zoning for controlled development during urban planning. Similarly the study can be carried out for other areas with rapid development like the CBDs of Eastland's, Upper hill, Westland's, Mombasa, Kisumu and Nakuru The new county traffic management policy of removing round about will definitely reduce traffic within Nairobi A long term approach which involves urban planning and design that will have a huge impact on levels of future traffic congestion
