Geography - S8 Revision Topics for Trial in November 2013 (Oundle Scholarship) Your Trial in November 2013 will last 1 hour and 30 minutes. You will undertake Sections 1 and 2 during the allocated 1 hour time slot for the Geography Examination. You will then complete the examination by undertaking Section 3 (the essay question) during your geography lesson on Saturday 30 th November The Trial paper will be divided into three sections:- Section 1: Applied Map Work and Rivers Section 2: Data Response Question Section 2: Essay Question
Structure of the Trial paper For Section 1 of the Trial, as well as questions testing your map reading skills, you will be set questions related to settlement and land use. Make sure you revise the appropriate sections on Settlement and Economic Geography in your Revision Guide (see below for page numbers). Also, make sure you read through the mapwork section of your Revision Guide in readiness for the Trial. In Section 2 you will choose one from a possible two data response questions. The data will usually be in the form of pictures/maps/tables/graphs. For Section3, you will have to answer one essay question from a possible five. The topics for these questions can be varied but usually cover: Energy, Rivers, Coasts, Industry (Economic Geography), Population and Settlement, Environmental Issues (National Parks), Earthquakes and Volcanoes and Weather and Climate. You can not possibly revise all these topics in detail. Energy is a topic we do not cover. Choose four of these topics to revise in detail and read through the other topics. Your main sources for revision are:- Exercise Books - you have two full exercise books and one that you have just started work on in Year 8. Class Folder - this is where you will find extra worksheets, information sheets and completed past papers. ISEB Geography Revision Guide Case Studies - You have A4 Revision sheets on Mount St Helens, the 2004 Asian Tsunami, the Global Fashion Industry (Nike), The Toyota Car Plant in Derby, Flooding in Bangladesh, Weather and Climate of the British Isles, Hurricane Katrina and The Yorkshire Dales. Break the information down even further by writing notes on card.
Population Handout this is in your class folder. Settlement Handout (for Section 1 of the Trial paper mapwork). Below is a breakdown of the topics that make up your Syllabus. I have indicated with a tick ( ) what I want you to revise for the November Trial. I have also given page numbers from your Revision Guide (RG) which covers topics you have yet to study:- Remember!!! Only revise those topics with a tick against them. Population and Settlement For the Trial you will need to know some elements of Settlement for the mapwork section but you will only be tested on your knowledge and understanding of population in the essay section. Please find information on Population in the Handout. Site and Situation of a settlement (Settlement Handout). Settlement patterns (Settlement Handout). Settlement Functions and changing functions of an urban area (RG page 76). Settlement Hierarchy (RG page 78 and Settlement Handout). Changing function of an urban area, with special reference to London (RG pages 83 to 85). Changes in land use from the city centre to the rural urban fringe for a typical British town (RG pages in Revision Guide and relevant section of your Handout on Settlement). Development of housing and business in the rural urban fringe (Settlement handout). Urban growth and problems in MEDCs and LEDCs (Settlement Handout).
The Population Explosion (Population Handout page 3). Population Structure (Population Handout page 4). The Development gap between MEDCs and LEDCs (Development Handout pages 1-6). World Population Distribution (Population Handout pages 9 and 10). Earthquakes and Volcanoes The global distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes (Exercise Book). Reasons for Plate movement convection currents (Exercise Book). How to annotate a diagram of a destructive plate boundary - where oceanic and continental plates meet (Exercise Book). How earthquakes occur and the effects of earthquakes on people (Exercise Book). An example both of an earthquake and a volcano to show the nature, causes, environmental and human effects, and human responses - one example from an MEDC (Mount St Helens in the USA)and one from an LEDC (The Asian Tsunami of 2004). Rivers and Coasts Processes of Weathering - Physical (Freeze/Frost shattering, onionskin), Chemical and Biological weathering (Exercise Book). Processes of erosion Hydraulic Action, Abrasion, Corrosion and Attrition (Exercise Book). Changes in the shape and size of a river from Upper Course to lower Course (Exercise Book). Processes of Transportation Solution, Suspension, Traction, Saltation, Swash, Backwash and Longshore Drift (RG pages 18 and 26). River landforms and processes Waterfall, Meander and Ox bow lake (RG pages 19-21). Coastal Landforms and Processes Headlands, Bays, Caves, Arches, Stacks, Stumps, Beaches, Spits, Longshore Drift and Deltas (RG pages 23-27).
The causes and affects of and responses to a flood (Exercise Book and A4 case study sheet on the Bangladesh Flood of 1998). Weather and Climate The difference between weather and climate (Exercise Book). Microclimates - the influence of aspect, shelter, buildings, surface and natural features in relation to microclimates (RG page 11). The Water Cycle - evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, interception, surface run-off, infiltration and throughflow (RG page 4). Rainfall relief, convectional, frontal (not depressions); how to draw or annotate a diagram and explain the formation of different types of rainfall (RG pages 5, 6 and 7). Causes of temperature and rainfall variation from place to place in the British Isles - the main temperature and rainfall patterns in the British Isles the influence of latitude, altitude, relief, prevailing winds, distance from coast and the impact of the North Atlantic Drift (RG pages 7, 8, 9 and 10). Weather Hazards Causes, Impacts and Responses. You need to revise the Hurricane Katrina (A4 revision sheet) case study. Map work Continents, Oceans and Seas, Highest Mountains and Mountain Ranges, main world rivers, Rainforests and Deserts (RG back pages where maps can be found). 4 and 6 figure grid references (RG pages 79 and 80 ). How to create a cross section of a landform shown on a map (RG pages 82 and 83). Map Symbols (Know the main symbols such as Church with tower/spire, post office, public house etc. (see key of any of the maps accompanying past papers you have completed should be in your class folder).
Identify physical landforms and human features shown on OS maps (RG page 82). Interpret photographic evidence (past practice questions). The following topics will be taught in the Spring Term (you should revise these from your ISEB Revision Guide you should already have A4 case study sheets on these topics):- Economic Geography Employment structure (RG page 61). Location of an industry (RG page 61). Globalisation (RG page 62). Case study The Global Fashion Industry: Nike (A4 case study sheet). Case study The Toyota car plant in Derby (A4 case study sheet). Environmental Issues The purpose of National parks in Britain (RG page 72). Sustainability and Stewardship (RG page 71). Case study Sustainable Development in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (RG pages 73, 74 and 75); case study notes given to you before Half-Term. Remember to only revise the topics I have ticked It is important for you to adopt an effective way to revise which suits you. Given my experience to date, I find that those students using a card system tend to fair better in examinations. This is where the student writes key points/draws diagrams from their notes/textbook onto a small card (size of a postcard) and revises these.
It is impossible to revise everything so you have to be smart identify the key points! For the case studies, I have done this for you but you can still break down the information further. A final note Examinations are important and people get nervous over them. The best way to approach examinations is to be well prepared. Your responses to questions will be more effective if you are relaxed and confident in your preparation.
