Distribution of weighing posts in Kalutara MOH area Dr. Sumal Nandasena Specialist in Public Health and Community Medicine WHO collaborating Centre for Public Health Workforce Development National Institute of Health Sciences Sri Lanka. Introduction Public Health Midwives spent considerable time for growth monitoring programme. It is expected to weigh each child in monthly up to the age of 2 years and every three months up to 5 years. Growth monitoring is expected to organize in the close proximity to the houses, thus increase the compliance. In this case study, the distribution of growth weighing posts in the Kalutara Medical Officer of Health area is visualized. This is important to understand the distribution of weighing posts in each PHM area. Methodology This case study includes field data collection and visualizing with QGIS software. Brief methodology of each step is described First, find GPS locations (longitude and latitude) of weighing posts using the GPS Monitor in each station in Kalutara MOH area. In this example, Gamin e Trex Legend H GPS (Global Positioning System monitors were used. The method of using this monitor is described in another example. The monitors have the memory, can be stored itself and download via a computer software. However, it is more practical in the field surveys to write down the longitudes and latitudes manually. While the data is collected from the field, a table can be prepared similar as shown below (Table 1). GIS Resource Center, National Institute of Health Sciences, Sri Lanka 1
Table 1. Part of detailed data table of GPS locations of weighing stations in Kalutara MOH area MOH place Station E N Koholana Clinic Koholana 8 Hoses of Ukwaththa Shashika House of Koshena Nelka Panvila Terans Thekka Waththa 11 Thekka Waththa PHM office Sewapiyasa vijaya gama Vijayagama Prajashalawa Alviswaththa 34 Samauyana Para, Godaparagahahena Alviswaththa Clinic Mihikathawaththa Pragashalawa Kithulawa 28 Sarvodaya Prajashalawa Sanasa office PHM House of Hambagedara Gamagoda 12 Gamagoda Clinic PHM House of Thewaththa Thapal Subodi Uyana Ibulagoda Prajashalawa Serupita Bolossagama Clinic House of Serupita Batahira Sajiwani Serupita Sewa Piyasa Kethhena Remunagoda Dispansary Using the above data, create a separate Excel document similar to Table 2. Table should include PHM area, weighing post name and GPS locations (longitude; E and latitude; N). In this table, all GPS locations should name with the PHM area and only the station name should include to the table. Make sure to delete all spaces between longitude and latitude values, For example should be written as GIS Resource Center, National Institute of Health Sciences, Sri Lanka 2

Part of arranged data table of GPS locations of weighing stations (in excel format) MOH place E N Station name Koholana Koholana Clinic Koholana Hoses of Ukwaththa Shashika Koholana House of Koshena Nelka Thekkawatta Panvila Terans Thekkawatta Thekka Waththa PHM office Thekkawatta Sewapiyasa vijaya gama Thekkawatta Vijayagama Prajashalawa Alviswaththa Samauyana Para, Godaparagahahena Alviswaththa Alviswaththa Clinic Kithulawa Mihikathawaththa Pragashalawa Kithulawa Sarvodaya Prajashalawa Kithulawa Sanasa office PHM Gamagoda Gamagoda Clinic PHM Gamagoda House of Thewaththa Thapal Gamagoda Subodi Uyana Serupita Ibulagoda Prajashalawa Serupita Bolossagama Clinic Serupita House of Serupita Batahira Sajiwani Serupita Serupita Sewa Piyasa Kethhena Remunagoda Dispansary After changes final Excel document of data should save as a CSV (Comma delimited) file since the data can add only in CSV format to the QGIS software. Now, open a new QGIS file to map the weighing posts in Kalutara MOH area. First, open QGIS by double-clicking on the Quantum GIS icon on the desktop, or by clicking Start /All Programs /Quantum GIS/Quantum GIS. Click on the Add vector layer button and browse to add Kalutara PHM area shape file to working space in QGIS ( Figure 1). The method of developing PHM area map is described in another case study. GIS Resource Center, National Institute of Health Sciences, Sri Lanka 3
Figure 1. Map of Kalutara MOH area with PHM areas To add GPS locations (longitude and latitude) of weighing pots in Kalutara MOH area, click on the icon named as Add Delimited Text Layer. It will appear a Create a Layer from a Delimited Text File dialog box. There, browse the CSV file contain GPS locations for weighing pots and select X field and Y field according to the table appear in the black space below (figure 9). GIS Resource Center, National Institute of Health Sciences, Sri Lanka 4
Figure 2: Create a Layer from a Delimited Text File dialog box Finally click OK and it gives the Kalutara MOH area map with the weighing posts as below (Figure 3). GIS Resource Center, National Institute of Health Sciences, Sri Lanka 5
Figure 3. Map of weighing posts in Kalutara MOH area Station names of the weighing posts also can add to the map. To label the station names, right click on Weighing Posts Layer and select Properties. Then Layer properties dialog box appear. In that dialog box, click on Labels in vertical menu, then check 'Label this layer with" check box. In the drop down list in that dialog box select the "Station name". There, can change the font style and size. After all changes click Apply and then OK. For that go to Project in tool bar, click Save as Image and give location and save. The weighing posts station names appear in the map as above (Figure 3). GIS Resource Center, National Institute of Health Sciences, Sri Lanka 6
