1 Lesson Plans (Advanced and Regular Physical Science) UNIT 23: The Periodic Table (6 days) Date Range: 4/13/15-4/17/15 (chapter 9) Topic, Assignments, Agenda, Board Configurations Standard/ Homeroom: Announcements UNIT: Atoms and Elements Monday 4/13/15 1. How do we know what an atom looks like if no one has seen one? 2. How has the atomic theory changed over time? 3. How can you differentiate between the parts of an atom? Learning Goal: Students will be able to utilize the periodic table and understand how it is organized. Objectives: Students should be able to 1. Identify patterns on the periodic table. 2. Use the periodic table to determine the number of protons, electrons and neutrons in an atom. 3. Discuss the relationship between position on the periodic table and the number of electrons in the element. 4. Relate the position of an atom in the periodic table to the arrangement of the electrons 1. How does the structure of an atom relate to the periodic table and bonding? #: Explore the scientific theory of atoms (also known as atomic theory) by describing the structure of atoms in terms of protons, neutrons, and electrons, and differentiate among these particles in terms of their mass, electrical charges and locations within the atom. SC.8.P.8.7#: Explore the scientific theory of atoms (also known as atomic theory) by recognizing that atoms are the smallest unit of an element and are composed of sub-atomic particles (electrons surrounding a nucleus containing protons and neutrons).
2 Atoms 1 understand how it is organized. 1. Discuss the relationship between position on the periodic table and the number of electrons in the element. Bell Ringer: Key concept builder and content practice A: Using the periodic table. Higher Level Thinking Question: Look at the periodic table and predict three elements that have lower melting points than calcium (Ca) Agenda: I do: Explain how to identify patterns of the periodic table. Use the periodic table to determine electrons, and neutrons in an atom. We do: Continue discussion on determining electron and neutrons in an atom. Continue FCAT Pretest review. You do: Complete worksheet Structure of the periodic table. Exit question: How does an element s position on the periodic table affect the periodic properties? Homework: NONE
3 Tuesday 4/14/15 Atoms 2 1. How does the structure of an atom relate to the periodic table and bonding? understand; how it is organize. 1. Identify patterns on the periodic table Bell Ringer: Complete worksheet Structure of the periodic table started in class yesterday. Higher Level Thinking Question: Why is hydrogen sometimes classified as a metal? Agenda: FSA Math test ( Students will be testing for most of 1 st of 2 nd period) 1 st and 2 nd period will watch the Video: Using the periodic table 4 th and 5 th period will follow the agenda below I do: discuss how to determine how many protons and electrons and neutron an atom has. We do: question # 1 on the Structure of the periodic table worksheet write answers in interactive notebook p. 212 You do: Structure of the periodic table worksheet. Exit question: None Homework: 9.1 lesson review
4 Wednesday 4/15/15 Atoms 3 1. How can you differentiate between the parts of an atom? understand; how it is organized 1. Identify patterns on the periodic table.
