1 Chemistry Department Staffing Proposal 20 April 2010 Introduction The chemistry department recently underwent two changes that require us to re-examine the staffing in our department. The first change is the retirement of Professor Allan Nishimura, whose last semester of teaching is Spring, The second change is the resignation of Professor Mako Masuno, who has been temporarily replaced by Professor Kristi Lazar her temporary position runs through Spring This proposal has two parts. The first part deals with replacing Professor Nishimura. The second part deals with replacing Professor Masuno. Replacing Professor Nishimura We request authorization to begin a search next Fall (2010) to replace Professor Nishimura for the Fall of We would prefer to do the search next Fall, as opposed to Fall 2012, for three reasons: 1) Our last search, for a biochemistry position, took three years to be successful; 2) The cost of filling the position with a temporary hire would not save very much money compared to hiring an assistant professor; and 3) We may have an opportunity in Kristi Lazar to hire a woman physical chemist, of which there are few. Replacing Mako Masuno The addition of Professor Masuno to the chemistry department happened for three reasons: a) the chemistry department routinely taught overloads, which the faculty have been increasingly reluctant to accept; b) Professor Masuno was a diversity candidate; and c) the hiring or Professor Masuno allowed Professor Tro to adopt a 7/12 course load for 7/12 salary. Find below a summary of instructional load for the chemistry department over the past six years. Chemistry Department al Loads Fall Spring Total for for for FTE: Load/ Note: Only regularly assigned load is reported, including chair & medical advising.
2 Before Mako resigned, our total available teaching units per year were 134 units (5.58 FTE), which fits nicely with the departmental load over the past 6 years. Contakes Marten Nishimura Masuno Tro Hill Total 14 units 134 units (5.58 FTE) Without professor Masuno, our department will be left with only 110 units available teaching units (4.48 FTE). In addition, the number of majors within department has grown has well. The figure below shows the growth in the number of chemistry majors over the past 25 years. After Professor Nishimura retires, our course load might change a bit. For example, Professor Nishimura taught the circuits course for the physics department. No one in our department other than Allan is qualified to teach that course, so it is unlikely that our department will be able to continue to teach it. However, we also are up against bulging enrollments in almost all of our courses. These enrollments have caused problems, especially in CHM 101 and CHM 102, the organic chemistry series. As a result of these issues, we have re-examined our offerings and have set a range of units ( FTE) for our department (see appendix). Even if Professor Tro were to return to full-time, we have only 120 units (5 FTE), still below even the minimum. By keeping Professor Tro at 7/12 load and replacing professor Masuno, we would have 134 available teaching units (5.58 FTE). We request authorization to begin a search in Fall (2011) to replace Professor Masuno for the Fall of This would require us to hire a temporary full-time faculty member for the Fall of 2011 while we do the search.
