1 Course Title: Chemistry 202 Hybrid Course Code: Chem Professor: Format: Prof. Mary Espanol Hybrid Course Length: 16 week, Aug 20 to Dec Introduction Welcome to Chemistry unit CSU, UC transferable course! This course is a continuation of general chemistry with a special focus on transition metals, chemical kinetics, equilibria, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, nuclear chemistry, and introduction to organic. Course Description At the end of the course, students will be able to Analyze and evaluate the laws of reaction kinetics for irreversible and reversible reactions, including reactions occurring in aqueous media, and in nuclear reactions. Examine the laws of thermodynamics to predict the spontaneity of chemical processes, including electrochemical processes. Evaluate the theories of bonding for coordination compounds. Formulate conclusions according to scientific inquiry by collecting and interpreting gravimetric, volumetric, and spectroscopic chemical data. Justify the identify of unknown cations and anions using experimental evidence from qualitative analysis, the scientific method, and chemical reasoning. Compose laboratory reports that illustrate meaningful conclusions based on and supported by data and observations. Course Information Recitation and Problem Solving Workshops There will be short online quiz on specific problem topics. Please consult the quiz schedule on canvas. The quiz will be based on the worksheet problems posted on the specific topic. Unit Exams There will be THREE/FOUR face-to-face EXAMS. Each exam will be based on the material covered in online tutorials and presentations. They will include homework, & laboratory experiments. These will be given during lab.

2 There are NO make-up exams. Only non-programmable, non-graphing calculators will be allowed during exams. If you fail to bring the appropriate calculator, be prepared to take the exam without a calculator Final Exam There will be a cumulative Final Exam (2 hrs). The final is on Thurs., 12/8/2018, BOYH 301. Grading Exams 40% Final Exam 15% Lab Experiments 20 Worksheets 10 Participation/Quizzes 5 Sapling Homework 10 Textbook information Chemistry by Paul Flowers {Open Stax College, Rice University) downloadable from: Available at the bookstore or also available as ebook in ibook for $4.99. Laboratory Experiments provided as handouts available in the course website in Canvas. Scientific calculator. Safety goggles required for each laboratory experiment. No one is permitted to conduct a lab experiment without goggles and will receive a zero for the experiment missed. Homework is available at saplinglearning.com. Create an account under higher education, at College of the Canyons. Choose: College of the Canyons Chemistry 202 Fall-2018 ESPANOL (available for $40 for one semester) Canvas Access All required materials must be brought to class each day. All required materials must be purchased by the 2nd class. Other relevant course information All information about the class can be accessed via canvas by logging into coc.instructure.com. The modules are divided into Pre-Lab, Post Lab, Worksheets, Tutorials and Practice Exams.

3 Worksheets must be completed and submitted online on Tuesday by 11:59 PM. Pre-lab must be completed by 6:30 PM on Thursday, prior to beginning the lab experiment. Post Lab reports and questions must be submitted online, one week after completion of the lab experiment.
