11 Supplementary Methods (E)-4-(4-(dihexylamino)styryl)benzonitrile (4b): Compound 3b (1.3 g, 4.5 mmol) was dissolved in dry THF (15 ml) and stirred under N 2 atmosphere at 78 C. LDA (4.1 ml, 8.1 mmol) was added slowly and the mixture was stirred for 10 min at 78 C. After diethyl 4-cyanobenzylphosphonate (1.4 g, 5.4 mmol) was added, the reaction was stirred overnight at room temperature. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo, and the resulting residue was dissolved in CHCl 3 and washed with water several times. The organic layer was dried over Na 2 SO 4 and solvent was evaporated. Compound 5a (0.6 g, 1.1 mmol) was added to the mixture and refluxed for 3 h. After cooling, KOH solution (10 ml, 6M in EtOH) was added to the mixture and stirred at 70 C for 3h. After cooling, the solvent was evaporated. The reactant was acidified with aq. HCl and extracted with CHCl 3. The organic layer was dried over Na 2 SO 4 and evaporated to dryness. The residue was purified by column chromatography over silica gel to give compound 7a as yellow solid (0.4 g, 58 %). 1 H-NMR (400 MHz, CDCl 3 ): 8.08 (d, J = 8.5 Hz, 2H), 7.60 (d, J = 8.5 Hz, 2H), (m, 4H), 7.38 (d, J = 8.7 Hz, 2H), 7.28 (d, J = 16 Hz, 1H), 7.23 (d, J = 16 Hz, 1H), 7.12 (d, J = 16 Hz, 1H), 7.07 (d, J = 16 Hz, 1H), 6.88 (d, J = 16 Hz, 1H), 6.62 (d, J = 8.9 Hz, 2H), 3.27 (t, J = 7.0 Hz, 4H), (m, 4H), (m, 36H), 0.88 (t, J = 6.7 Hz, 6H). 13 C NMR spectrum of this compound could not be measured due to low solubility. This compound did not show mass peak in ESI- and APCI-MS measurements. 2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl 4-((E)-4-((E)-4-(didodecylamino)styryl)styryl)benzoate (1): Compound 7a (80 mg, 0.12 mmol) was dissolved in dry CH 2 Cl 2 (35 ml) and stirred under N 2 atmosphere at 0 C. Triethylene glycol monomethyl ether (20 mg, 0.12 mmol), DMAP (43 mg, 0.35 mmol), DIPEA (148 mg, 1.1 mmol), DPTS (104 mg, 0.35 mmol) and EDC (27 mg, 0.14 mmol) were added to the mixture. The solution was stirred overnight at room temperature. The reaction mixture was diluted with CHCl 3 and washed with water several times. The organic layer was dried over Na 2 SO 4 and the solvent was evaporated to dryness. The residue was purified by column chromatography over silica gel and reprecipitation (CHCl 3 / MeOH) to give compound 1 as yellow solid (77 mg, 80 %). 1 H-NMR (500 MHz, CDCl 3 ): 8.04 (d, J = 8.3 Hz, 2H), 7.56 (d, J = 8.5 Hz, 2H), 7.50 (d, J = 8.6 Hz, 2H), 7.47 (d, J = 8.6 Hz, 2H), 7.38 (d, J = 8.9 Hz, 2H), 7.21 (d, J = 16 Hz, 1H), 7.11 (d, J = 16 Hz, 1H), 7.07 (d, J = 16 Hz, 1H), 6.88 (d, J = 16 Hz, 1H), 6.62 (d, J = 8.9 Hz, 2H), 4.48 (t, J = 4.8 Hz, 2H), 3.85 (t, J = 4.8 Hz, 2H), (m, 8H), 3.38 (s, 3H), 3.28 (J, J =
