2 Summary: BYU Hawaii Curriculum Proposal Number [16-10] Section 2 Overview (Support) The Natural Science Department has chosen to inactivate CHEM 251/L and 252/L (Organic Chem I & II) and to reactivate then as CHEM 351/L and 352/L which is the level the classes used to be taught at and that is the normal level nationally. But in the process they realized that these classes (CHEM 295 and CHEM 350) have those classes as a prereq: 295. Organic Spectroscopy (3) (F-even years) Structure determination of organic and bio-organic chemicals using infrared (IR), proton and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), ultravioletvisible (UV-VIS), and mass spectroscopies (MS). (Prerequisites: CHEM 252 and 252L.) 350. Advanced Organic Synthesis (3) (F-odd years) A concentration on advanced topics in organic chemistry including enantioselective catalysis, organometallic chemistry, name reactions and a study of more advanced, arrow-pushing, reaction mechanisms for the synthesis of complex molecules. (Prerequisite: CHEM 352 and 352L). They would like these classes to be numbered CHEM 395 and CHEM 450. Advanced Organic Synthesis or CHEM450 is numbered as a 400 level course because it presents the subject of Organic Chemistry at a much deeper level. Advanced Organic Chemistry courses are usually taught as 400 or 500 level courses. The only reason why we initially placed Advance Organic Synthesis as a 300 level course was because the prerequisites, Organic Chemistry I and II, were numbered as 251 and 252.

3 Summary of Changes BIOL 340 OR MATH 221 o Add MATH 221 as an alternative option to BIOL 340 on the MRS, Catalog, and Mapper programming. If students have taken MATH 221 then it will count as credit towards BIOL 340. (Not needed that the two classes become equivalents in PeopleSoft; would need the Math department to sign off on making the equivalent in PeopleSoft since it has implications on other classes for which Math 221 is a prereq.)
