Course Description Chemistry 185 is the second semester of the two part General Chemistry course at OCC. The topics covered include Matter, Kinetics, Equilibrium, Acids and Bases, Complex Ions, Thermodynamics and Electrochemistry. The chapters to be covered include 12 through 20, 24 and special topics. Required Texts (1) General Chemistry, Principles and Modern Applications, 10 th Ed., Petrucci, R.H., Herring, F.G., Madura, J.D. and Bissonnette, C., Pearson Canada Inc., (2) General Chemistry Notes, CHEM , OCC, Wiley Custom Services (3) Solutions Guide is optional. Prerequisites: CHEM 180 with a grade of C or higher. Grading During the semester there will be 17 lab experiments, Homework assignments (optional and not graded), 6 Quizzes worth 20 pts each (lowest is dropped) and 3 exams worth 200 points each. There are also optional Practice Tests and Powerpoint Overviews. All overall totals are curved to the appropriate point totals below % A Exam 01 : 200 pts 80-90% B Exam 02: 200 pts 65-80% C Exam 03: 200 pts 50-65% D Quizzes: 100 pts 0-50% F Labs: 300 pts Total: 1000 pts I curve off the highest score in the class, rather than the maximum available, giving an A + to the top. I am big on punctuality and attendance and will award 10 extra credit points to all who never miss class (both lecture and lab) and are never late (both lecture and lab). I also offer another 10 pts for any who turn in ALL homework assignments at the end and take all quizzes and exams. NO exceptions!

2 2 Exams These exams will cover all material discussed in lecture and lab up to that point, with a focus on recent chapters. The only material from prior exams included is that necessary to know to solve problems on the current Exam. I will provide all equations, constants and English to Metric conversion factors necessary for the exams. A Periodic Table along with any other added tables will be included with the exams. These are long (but straightforward), so plan to use the entire lecture period. Bring calculators, an eraser and extra pencils (no Scantron forms are ever needed in my class other than the Safety Quiz). Quizzes There will be 6 short quizzes given throughout the semester during lab (at the very beginning so don t be late!). These are worth 20 pts each and the lowest is dropped for 100 pts total at the end of the semester. There are NO make-up quizzes or extra time if you are late. This is why I drop a quiz for those bad days we all have. These normally take about 15 to 30 minutes and focus on specific recent topics covered in lecture and/or lab. Practice Tests There will be a Practice Test provided online after each chapter is completed as well as a Powerpoint Overview of the main concepts of that chapter and associated practice problems. These are the most important things to master to do well on the Exams, with my lecture notes a strong 2 nd and the homeworks and prelab assignments in 3 rd. I will post answer keys to the Practice Tests in lab several days after they are posted online. The problems are ones I used on past exams. These are purely voluntary and are not collected or graded. These are extra things I bust my butt to do to help you so Merry Xmas! Labwork There are 17 lab experiments worth varying amounts of points due to unknowns. The total points for lab adds up to 300 pts at the end of the semester (Including attendance, safety quiz and General Points). The hands on experience is a must for understanding the lecture material, so no lab grades are dropped. The beginning of each lab period is used to cover any important safety or procedural issues for a lab, take quizzes or brush up on lecture material. Very little will be explained for labs themselves, since at this level you are expected to be able to read procedures and perform experiments on your own. Dr. Laux will be covering all three of the lab sections this semester. When finished with each lab, you should clean up your area and lock your items up. There are no make up labs for any reason and no switching lab times for safety and administrative concerns. CHEM 185 lab is self paced and each student works on their own. Be prepared ahead of time by reading the Prelab assignments for 1 to 2 labs ahead because when a Lab is completed, you should start on the next one with any leftover time available. Time management and efficiency are the keys to success in Lab. You should be well prepared on the basics of making measurements and certain techniques from CHEM 180, and these are expected to be performed at a high level from the beginning. Points in lab are based on proven skill through results and unknowns, attendance, a safety quiz, and general lab performance (which includes: safety, proper calculation set up and units, procedural understanding, independent work, prelab completion, lab capability and significant figures, etc.). No labs can be taken home and there is absolutely no use of any electronic devices in Lab (phones, laptops, i-pads, etc.) which could be used to take photos of lab pages to cheat or take home to do. An automatic 0 points will be given and a 20% penalty on an unknown for that lab if an electronic device is seen in lab. Step outside to make calls. A 20 question multiple choice safety quiz must be passed (18 or higher) on the 2 nd lab day, with the Safety Information on my website and covered briefly on day 1 in Lab. Waitlisted petitioners only get 1 shot to pass. Registered students get a 2 nd chance, and only a 3 rd chance with a 16 or 17 score on the 2 nd take. The safety quiz and all labs are in English. A dictionary is available in lab, but no electronic translators are allowed. If more than 4 lab periods are missed, you will automatically receive a failing grade for lab overall. More on lab procedures, points and safety issues will be discussed the first week of lab.

3 3 Homework There will be usually be two homework assignments per chapter posted online after the material is covered in lecture. These are hand written and ALL work must be shown for credit. I am looking to check HOW you set up calculations and explain your thoughts. Include unit conversion set ups, units, significant figures, intermediate (non rounded) answers and rounded final answers that are boxed. These are very critical to doing well in this class and your effort on the HW will directly affect your Exam grades and your pace in the lab. Do NOT waste time in lab trying to learn things you should have learned at home! I guarantee you will not finish all the labs if you do this. HW assignments will not be collected or graded (I don t like to penalize you if you make mistakes while practicing). Check your own work against my answer keys (posted in the hall outside my office a few days after being assigned). If you feel you are very close to a grade change at the end of the semester, you can turn in ALL HW assignments (must be completed) for 10 pts extra credit. This is all or nothing for doing the minimum amount of practice necessary for success. These are due anytime before 2:30 pm on the day after the Final Exam. All assigned problems and relevant reading will be posted on my website under assignments by 6 pm on the night assigned. I post the questions with space for your work, so please use those (it makes grading easier and faster). 5 5 Cheating (or Academic Dishonesty to be politically correct) Bad news!! If caught cheating on an exam, you will receive a failing grade. In the lab, any copying of data is plagiarism and will result in a zero for that lab. You're paying to learn, think for yourself, and apply that knowledge to your life and nobody ever learned by cheating. Naughty naughty!! The Dean will be contacted for any specific problems. Tips Come to class and take NOTES!! Bring a calculator to lecture and lab everyday. Keep on top of things (reading, homework) and it will be smooth sailing. Fall behind and it'll be tough. ASK QUESTIONS if you don't understand. Use and abuse my office hours and me if necessary. Be extra prepared for lab and do not fall behind. If you miss more than 2 days of class, you might consider dropping because we move very fast and cover a lot of material in 16 weeks. Use unit equations and algebraic methods to solve computational problems in the areas of unit conversion, chemical equilibria, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and kinetics. 2. Use equilibrium expressions and the principle of Le Chatelier to calculate the concentrations of species in chemical systems at equilibrium and to predict the changes that occur in response to perturbations to chemical systems at equilibrium. 3. Use the atomic theory and kinetic molecular theory to explain the properties of solids, liquids, gases, and solutions, and to describe the changes that occur on a molecular level as matter changes phases. 4. Apply thermodynamic properties such as enthalpy, entropy, and free-energy to describe the behavior, energy changes, and spontaneity of chemical reactions. 5. Apply safe and proper laboratory techniques to make accurate, reproducible measurements of masses and volumes, and accurate, reproducible experimental observations.
