5 List of classification and labelling of chemicals in accordance with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) 1 Scope This document is based on the harmonized criteria of SANS for the classification of hazardous substances, including waste, for their safe transport, use at the workplace or in the home according to their health, environmental and physical hazards, for example, acute toxicity and flammability It gives, in tabular form, the GHS classification and label elements of the most commonly used chemicals The classification and labelling of pharmaceuticals (including stock remedies), food additives, cosmetics, and pesticide residues in food are not covered by this document in terms of labelling at the point of intentional intake However, they are covered where workers might be exposed to them and in transport if the potential exposure warrants 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document For dated references, only the edition cited applies For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies Information on currently valid national and international standards can be obtained from the SABS Standards Division SANS 10228:2006, The identification and classification of dangerous goods for transport SANS 10234:2007, Globally Harmonized System of classification and labelling of chemicals (GHS) 3 Methodology of re-classification from existing systems 31 GHS re-classification from existing systems 311 Substances classified in accordance with existing systems need not be retested but can be re-classified in accordance with the criteria given in SANS on strength of available information When new information becomes available, a chemical shall be re-classified taking the new information into account 312 For the purposes of SANS 10234, the following categories shall not be used for classification: a) flammable liquids category 4; and b) toxic substances category 5 3
