1 AP Chemistry Patrick Hemmingsen Telephone Course Description: The AP Chemistry course is designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first year of college. During this course, students will attain a deep understanding of fundamentals and a reasonable competence in dealing with chemical problems. The course will also contribute to the development of the students ability to think clearly and express their ideas, orally and in writing, with clarity and logic. The course will provide instruction on the structure of matter (atomic theory and structure, chemical bonding, and nuclear chemistry), states of matter (gasses, liquids, solids, and solutions), and reactions (reaction types, stoichiometry, equilibrium, kinetics, and thermochemistry). There will be an emphasis on chemical calculations, mathematical formulation of principles, and laboratory work. Texts: Brown, Theodore L., et al. Chemistry: The Central Science, Eleventh Edition. Upper Saddle River: Pearson Education Inc., Nelson, John H. and Kemp, Kenneth C. Laboratory Experiments for Chemistry: The Central Science, Eleventh Edition. Upper Saddle River: Pearson Education Inc., Venderbrink, Sally. Laboratory Experiments for AP Chemistry. Batavia: Flinn Scientific, Grading Policy: Homework: Tests/Quizzes: Term grades will be calculated as a weighted average of the following. Exams 50% Quizzes 20% Labs 20% Homework 10% Homework must be completed in a timely manner to prepare the student for discussion. The majority of homework will require calculations and mathematical formulations of principles like calculating empirical formula, percent composition, equilibrium and rate constants, Gibbs free energy, etc. Quizzes will occur every Friday. They will cover any homework, assigned reading or laboratories done that week. Some of the quiz problems will be directly from the homework and others will be the same with different numbers used in the problems. There will be a test at the end of every unit. The tests will be similar in format to the AP Chemistry exam with a multiple choice and free response section.
2 Labs: The labs will be hands-on/ wet labs with possibly a few teacher demonstrations. The labs completed require following processes and procedures, making and recording observations, and data manipulation. Students will need to communicate and work collaboratively in groups in the lab but each student is required to write a laboratory report in their lab notebook for every lab they perform. See Laboratory Notebook page for more information. Semester Grades: Semester grades will be 90% term grade and 10% semester final as per school policy. Study Assistance: Throughout the year times will be posted or announced for study assistance. If you feel you are getting lost please get help from me as soon as possible. I also recommend that you form a study group with fellow students to work on problem solving and test preparation.
