Molecular Microbiology and Immunology Need BOR approval The department offers a series of courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology (MMI). The MMI major is a joint effort by the School of Medicine and College of Science and trains students in the fundamentals of modern microbiology, with an emphasis on human and animal infectious diseases and immunology. Students are encouraged to become involved in laboratory research supervised by one of the faculty members, who pursue a variety of medically related endeavors. Page 2 of 35

3 The MMI curriculum will appeal to students who wish to pursue careers in microbiology research and clinical laboratory microbiology. In addition, the MMI program is an excellent preparation for pre-health professional students seeking admission to professional programs in the health sciences and dental and medical schools. The program of study will include the university core curriculum, general electives, and required preparatory courses in mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics. Students will be required to complete seven core courses in microbiology and immunology, along with specialty electives and a capstone course in microbiology. I. 8 Concentration( 3236), combine ENV and PROF CH plus two new emphases into one plan with four sub-plans department also strongly encourages undergraduate students to become involved in laboratory research under the supervision of a faculty member. Undergraduate research is an outstanding learning opportunity that cannot be found in class work alone. Three bachelor s degree programs are available for undergraduate students majoring in chemistry. The bachelor of science in chemistry degree is offered with the professional chemistry specialization (BS-CHP) and the environmental chemistry specialization (BS-CEC). Both specializations provide rigorous training in experimental and theoretical chemistry, and include undergraduate research and specialized courses chosen according to the student`s interests. The professional chemistry specialization is designed for students who are interested in a career as a chemist in industry or government, or in graduate school in chemistry or related areas. The environmental chemistry specialization is recommended for students interested in employment as an environmental chemist or in graduate study in environmental science. The third program, a regular bachelor of science degree with a field of concentration (major) in chemistry (BS-CH), has a more flexible curriculum that provides basic training for careers in chemistry or other areas, such as health sciences or teaching. Majors planning to pursue medicine, dentistry, or other health professions are advised to take life sciences courses as electives. Those seeking employment as chemists should take recommended upper-division courses as electives. A minor in chemistry is also offered for students majoring in other fields. The bachelor of science in chemistry degree has been approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS) as satisfying rigorous national standards. The environmental chemistry specialization also satisfies the extra ACS requirements for environmental chemistry. To obtain ACS certification of their degrees, students completing the bachelor of science in chemistry with the professional chemistry specialization or the environmental chemistry option must take Introductory Biochemistry ( BCH 400 ) as one of their chemical science electives. Contact a departmental advisor for information about current requirements for certification. The department offers four Emphases within a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry degree: Professional Chemistry Emphasis, Environmental Chemistry Emphasis, General Emphasis, and Pre-medical Emphasis. The Professional Chemistry Emphasis and the Environmental Chemistry Emphasis provide rigorous training in experimental and theoretical chemistry, and include undergraduate research and specialized courses chosen according to the student s interests. The Professional Chemistry Emphasis is designed for students who are interested in a career as a chemist in industry or government, or in graduate school in chemistry or related areas. The Environmental Chemistry Emphasis is recommended for students interested in employment as an environmental chemist or in graduate study in environmental science. Both of these Emphases have been approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS) as satisfying rigorous national standards for ACS certification. The General Emphasis is major program in chemistry that provides strong training for careers in chemistry and flexibility to pursue other areas, such as allied health sciences or K-12 teaching. The Pre-Medical Emphasis is designed for students interested in medicine, dentistry, and related health professions. It includes a strong curriculum in chemistry as well as courses in the biological sciences required by professional schools. A minor in chemistry is also offered for students majoring in other fields. Field of Concentration in Chemistry, B.S. I.
