1 Chemistry Semester Project 2018 uidelines Summary of the project: 1. Choose a demonstration 2. Make a video of yourself safely performing the demonstration during class 3. Research the chemistry behind the demonstration 4. Prepare a computer-based slide show/video about your demonstration and research I have been assigned. My partner(s) is/are. This project is worth 30 points. It will count as a 30-point lab for the fourth quarter and as 15% of the semester exam. Project Background/Purpose In this project, students will be assigned an exciting chemical demonstration to perform. In pairs, they will: write out lab reports that include the materials, hazards, procedure, and disposal for the demonstration conduct scientific investigations using appropriate tools and techniques perform the demonstration safely during class make and edit a video of their performance of the demonstration research the balanced equation, type of reaction, formulas of compounds, names of compounds, and structures of organic compounds related to their demonstration apply chemistry vocabulary to real-life situations apply second-semester chemistry vocabulary to explain how the demonstration worked perform a second-semester chemistry calculation based on the demonstration create a computer-based slide show to present their video, research, vocabulary, and calculations to the class Project Information There will be NO lab time given outside of class (except for make-up time due to excused absences). Use your two days of lab time wisely! Making up work missed due to an excused absence will be difficult, if not impossible, to do so DO NOT BE ABSENT if at all possible. You must know the hazards and disposals before using any chemicals. You can work with your partner on the planning of the labs but EACH PERSON MUST WRITE HIS/HER OWN LAB REPORT You will work on your slide show and video with your partner, but each person must be an equal contributor. rades will be individually assigned. Label each slide with a name! Be sure to request any chemicals and equipment you need for a lab no later than 7:25 am on the day you need them. (The day before is even better!) All lab reports must be written in blue or black ink.

2 Only original (not rewritten or re-typed) lab reports will be accepted. (An original lab report is one that has the teacher s signature(s) on it.) Project Daily Checklist Thursday May 31, 2018 Planning Day 1 Listen to the teacher explain the requirements of the project Choose your demonstration Begin writing the pre-lab (research, materials, hazards, procedure, disposal) for the demonstration in your lab book in ink Split up the research topics so that each partner has equal responsibilities Begin researching the chemicals and reactions involved with the demonstration Work on pre-lab and research Friday June 1, 2018 Planning Day 2 Finish writing your pre-lab (research, materials, hazards, procedure, disposal) Request chemicals and equipment needed Continue researching the chemicals and reactions involved with the demonstration Start your slide show (goal: 2 or more slides finished!) Finish your pre-lab IN INK for tomorrow! Work on research Monday June 4, 2018 Lab Day 1 et your lab report signed by the teacher Prepare your demonstration Take photos of your demonstration Shoot a video of your demonstration (if possible you can shoot the video Tuesday, too) Request any equipment and chemicals needed for lab day #2 from the teacher Review how the lab day went Continue researching the equations and chemicals of your demonstration Tuesday June 5, 2018 Lab Day 2 Finish preparing your demonstration Take photos of your demonstration Chemistry Semester Project Page 2 of 5

3 Shoot a video of your demonstration Clean up your demonstration Continue researching the equations and chemicals of your demonstration If possible, start editing your video and/or working on your slide show Wednesday June 6, 2018 Planning Day 3 Edit your video Continue working on your slide show (which will include your video and photos) Continue working on your research Continue working on your video, slide show, and research Thursday June 7, 2018 Planning Day 4 SLIDE SHOW DUE!! Spend part of the hour finishing your research Spend the rest of the hour finishing your slide show SLIDE SHOW AND LAB BOOK DUE AT THE END OF THE HOUR!! 4 Here is the list of research topics to include about your demonstration in your presentation: Divide these between you and your partner: balanced equation(s) states of matter symbols in the equation formula of each chemical used/formed type of bond for each chemical used type(s) of reaction(s) name of each chemical used/formed Each person in the group needs 5 of these: use/application of chemical vocabulary from the semester: - definition AND how it is related you your demonstration molarity, diatomic gas, reactant, product, precipitate, aqueous, coefficient, solubility, limiting, excess, acid, base, neutral, ph, salt, neutralization, system, surroundings, energy, exothermic, endothermic, heat, temperature, covalent, ionic, cation, anion, polyatomic, monatomic, oxidation number/charge, wavelength, frequency, average atomic mass, atomic number, protons, neutrons, electrons, reaction rate, surface area, catalyst Each person in the group needs 1 of these: application of a calculation from the semester to the demonstration: - must show work to receive full credit! MOST CREDIT (see rubric) = mass-mass stoichiometry or calculation of particles from grams LESS CREDIT (see rubric) = mole-mole stoichioimetry, calculation of moles from grams, molarity calculation Topics/vocabulary/calculations I will do: Topics/vocabulary/calculations my partner will do: calculation: calculation: Chemistry Semester Project Page 4 of 5

5 Final Project Lab Report You will write your project lab report in your lab book in blue or black ink. Even if you need more than one day to complete the preparation and practice of the demonstration, you will just add more data, not write another lab report. See the rubric for how the lab report will be scored. Below is the format and order I am looking for on the final project lab reports: Title: The title should be the title of your demonstration. NO QUESTION! NO HYPOTHESIS! Materials: List the materials and chemicals needed for your demonstration in two neat columns. Be careful many demonstration handouts leave off the basics (like a balance, medium scoop, or massing cups)! Talk over your demonstration with your teacher to see if any modifications need to be made or materials added. Hazards: Write The student safety contract applies. Then write one complete sentence of hazards for each chemical! Find SDS hazards sheets in the black binders in the classroom or online at Disposal: Before you begin any demonstration, you must know the disposal procedure for ALL of your chemicals (reactants) AND for the chemicals you will be making (products). This information is often available from the demonstration books/handouts. If it is not (and even if it is), use the Flinn Catalog (at least to double-check). Be sure to include the disposal numbers and a summary of the disposal procedure for each chemical! Discuss your disposal plans with the teacher to make sure they are safe. Procedure: A) If your procedure is 5 steps or less, copy it into your lab book. B) If your procedure is MORE than 5 steps, talk it over with your teacher, then write a 5- step summary of the procedure in your lab book. Data: This section will contain the normal data: everything you see, feel, hear, smell and measure (especially what you measure). Labeled set-up sketches are very important! Be sure to record any and all changes you make to the printed directions.
