It involves the study of the common reactions which organic functional groups undergo and to further develop the skills required for using this knowledge base in organic synthesis and organic spectroscopy. MODULE LEARIG OUTCOMES By engaging successfully with this module a student will be able to 1. Describe and define the three-dimensional structures and shapes of molecules 2. Identify and describe the reactions of a range of common functional groups and their use in synthesis including the mechanisms by which these reactions occur 3. Understand the stereochemical aspects associated with reactions at saturated carbon 4. Describe electrophilic substitution reactions of benzene and apply this knowledge to make a range of di- and tri-substituted aromatics compounds 5. Discuss experimental approaches to organic spectroscopy suitable for a range of simple compounds and be familiar with instrument parameters 6. Describe how information from 1 HMR, 13 CMR, IR and Mass spectra can be used to give structural information IDICATIVE COTET Functional groups and nomenclature ucleophiles, electrophiles and curly arrows to show reaction mechanisms Stereochemistry. Structural isomerism and stereoisomerism. Optical isomerism: chirality, enantiomers, diastereomers, meso compounds, Fischer projections and specification of configuration (R/S system). Geometrical isomerism: (E/Z system). Conformational isomerism in butane and cyclohexane systems. Simple reactions of functional groups e.g. alkyl halides, alkenes, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, amines, carboxylic acids, esters, electrophilic aromatic substitution chemistry. Stereochemistry of addition and substitution reactions.

2 Preparation and use of organo-lithium and organo-magnesium reagents in organic synthesis Electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions of benzene 1 HMR spectroscopy: chemical shift, integrals, coupling patterns and coupling constants. 13 CMR spectroscopy: chemical shift, coupling and decoupling. Infrared spectroscopy: functional group and fingerprint regions; interpretation of IR spectra. Organic mass spectrometry: fragmentations and functional group oriented fragmentations and rearrangements; use of EI libraries Complementary use of IR, 1 H MR, 13 C MR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry in structural elucidation of organic compounds. LEARIG AD TEACHIG METHODS Students will be supported in their learning, to achieve the above outcomes, in the following ways: Learning and teaching activities will include a mixture of lectures and whole group tutorials. Self-directed studies will reinforce this information and students will be encouraged to consolidate and extend lecture material from recommended standard textbooks and online sources. Students will examine and broaden the synthetic application of knowledge acquired by doing a variety of formative problem solving exercises. The module Blackboard site will acts as a repository for course information and learning support material, assessment activities and feedback. ASSESSMET STRATEG AD TASK IFORMATIO The module will be assessed through a combination of coursework an end of module exam. Coursework Workbook (40%) A workbook will be provided at the start of the module. This approach will allow students to practice relevant problems and prepare themselves with better understanding for the summative assessments on the whole. Moreover, students will receive rapid feedback and support for topics with which they have difficulty in understanding. Examination (60%) o. 3 Students will receive feedback on their performance in the following ways: Verbal feedback may be given on a whole group or individual basis in lectures and tutorials. Written and verbal comments will be provided on summative coursework exercise. Formative tests performed on the VLE will provide a level of instant feedback and marked work will be returned with tutor feedback.
