2 -2- TEXTBOOK(S): (A) REQUIRED x ; (B) RECOMMENDED Name: Physical Chemistry For The Chemical And Biological Sciences Author: Raymond Chang Publisher: University Science Books Year: 3rd Edition (2000) PREREQUISITES: CHM (138H, 139H / 151Y); MAT (135Y / 137Y / 157Y) COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: The course goals include: 1: To gain an understanding of the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics as well as Gibbs Free Energy 2: To apply the concepts from the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics as well as Gibbs Free Energy to real phenomena. 3: To gain an understanding of solution properties and behaviour. 4: To gain an understanding of equilibria in gaseous systems, solutions, chemical reactions and related systems. 5: To gain an understanding of the kinetics of reactions. RATIONALE FOR INCLUSION IN CURRICULUM: This course provides students with a firm foundation in basic physical chemistry which is a fundamental building block necessary for future courses including pharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics. TEACHING METHOD/FORMAT: The course format consists of two 90 minute lectures delivered each week on Tuesdays and Fridays. In addition there is also a one hour tutorial where assigned problems are discussed by a teaching assistant. STUDENT EVALUATION PROCEDURES: The evaluation procedure includes a midterm test and a final exam worth 45% and 55%, respectively, of the final grade.

3 -3- MISSED TEST/EXAM POLICY: If a student misses a midterm or final exam, s/he must file an appeal or petition with the registrar to seek permission to write a make-up test/exam. If the appeal is approved, s/he may write the make-up test/exam which will then be weighted the same as the missed test/exam. If the appeal is NOT approved, a grade of zero will be assigned for the test/exam.
