The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the answers. Attempt all questions from Section I and any four questions from Section II. The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets [ ]. Question 1 SECTION I (40 Marks) Attempt all questions from this section. Name the chemical constituent of the brown ring Y. 2. Which of the two solutions-iron [II] sulphate or conc. sulphuric acid, do X and Z represent. X 3. State why the unstable brown ring decomposes completely on distrubing the test tube. Y 4. Give a reason why the brown ring does not settle down at the bottom of the test tube. Z 5. Name the gas evolved when acidified iron [II] sulphate reacts with dilute nitric acid in the brown ring test.
