Mrs. Chausse s Chemistry Gifted Lesson Plan: Unit 11 Chemical Reactions January 4 18, 2018 Wednesday, January 3, 2018 Naming and writing formulas Objective: SWBAT identify a compound as either ionic, covalent or an acid after reviewing terminology at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, syllabus, make up policy form, Do Now sheet, periodic table, table of contents, Find Someone Who, worksheet 15-minute homeroom before 1 st period to get schedules Do now: Students will collect all materials and organize their binders. Review policies: Students will receive another copy of the syllabus to review. They will also go over the science department make up work policy form Students will participate in a Find Someone Who activity to as a review about ionic and covalent compounds. The class will review the answers after 10 minutes. The purpose of the activity is for the students to see how much they need to review and how important it is for them to remember the content for this semester. Students will take notes on the important terminology from last semester that is still important for this semester about ionic and covalent compounds. Students will practice identifying compounds as either ionic, covalent, or acids. Class will review the answers at the end of class. Homework: none Thursday, January 4, 2018 Naming and writing formulas Objective: SWBAT write the formula and chemical name for various ionic and covalent compounds, and acids at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, Do Now sheet, periodic table, flow chart, worksheet Do now: Students will copy the table of contents for the unit and put it in their binders Students will re-take notes from before the break on how to name ionic, covalent compounds and acids in the flowchart Students will practice writing the name or formula for these compounds Homework: finish worksheet

Friday, January 5, 2018 Objective: SWBAT determine the reactants and products in skeleton equations that follow the Law of Conservation of Mass at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, Do Now worksheet, worksheet, periodic table Do now: Students will write either the formula or chemical name for three covalent compounds and three acids Students will review the material from the previous day Students will take notes on reactants and products of a chemical reaction in terms of an equation Students will practice writing skeleton equations Homework: finish worksheet Monday, January 8, 2018 Objective: SWBAT explain the Law of Conservation of Mass after conducting a mini lab at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, Alka-Seltzer tablet, water, ziplock bag, balance, Do now: Students will write a skeleton equation for a sample problem Students will review the work from the previous day Students will review the procedures for the mini lab and all lab safety procedures (Students will get goggles and aprons) Students will conduct lab according to procedures on the lab manual in order to explain the Law of Conversation of Mass by calculating the masses of water and an Alka-Seltzer tablet before and after a chemical reaction Students will answer response questions and complete a lab report Homework: study for a quiz tomorrow on writing skeleton equations

Tuesday, January 9, 2018 Objective: SWBAT take a quiz on writing skeleton equations at 85% accuracy. SWBAT balance skeleton chemical equations at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, periodic table, worksheet Do now: Students will calculate the mass of one product when given the masses of the reactants and the other product and explain how they used the Law of Conservation of Mass to determine it. Students will use the example from Do Now from Thursday to balance as a teacher model example Students will practice two more balancing skeleton chemical equation examples Students will take the quiz on writing skeleton equations. Students will finish the lab from yesterday if they have not already and submit it Students will practice balancing equations (skeleton equations) Students will check answers with their partner Homework: finish worksheet if not finished in class Wednesday, January 10, 2018 Objective: SWBAT balance chemical equations after writing the skeleton equations at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, periodic table, worksheet Do now: Students will balance one chemical equation Students will review the quiz from Monday. Students who did not take the quiz will take a different version today in class. Students will review the work from yesterday. Students will practice balancing equations from the skeleton equations they wrote Homework: finish worksheet if not finished in class

Thursday, January 11, 2018 Objective: SWBAT classify a chemical equation as one of the six types of chemical reactions at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, periodic table, worksheet, product predictions packet Do now: Students will write a skeleton equation and balance it Students will review the work from the previous day Students will take notes on the six types of chemical reactions including the formula set up and clues to recognize them Students will practice classifying them from example skeleton equations Students will review the packet used for the next few lessons and begin the prep work Homework: prep packet Friday, January 12, 2018 Objective: SWBAT predict the products of combustion, single replacement, double replacement, and acid-base chemical reactions at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, periodic table, product prediction packet Do now: Students will classify four skeleton equations by the type of chemical reaction Students will take notes on how to predict the products for combustion, single replacement, double preplacement, and acid-base reactions Students will predict the products for the combustion reactions in the product prediction packet Homework: finish packet if not in class Monday, January 15, 2018 NO SCHOOL MLK DAY Objective: SWBAT Materials: Elmo, Do now: Students Homework: none

Tuesday, January 16, 2018 Objective: SWBAT predict the products for the synthesis and decomposition reactions at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, periodic table, product prediction packets Do now: Students will predict the products for a single replacement, double replacement and an acid-base reaction Students will review the material from the previous day Students will take notes on the different types of products formed in synthesis and decomposition reactions and work examples Students will practice the remaining problems in the packet and review the answers Students will review the procedures for the lab on Wednesday Homework: none; closed-toed shoes tomorrow!!!!! Wednesday, January 17, 2018 Objective: SWBAT predict the products formed after classifying the type of reaction formed while conducting a lab at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, lab reports, lab manuals, aprons, goggles Do now: Students will don lab aprons and goggles as per lab safety procedures due to working with chemicals. Students will predict the products of various reactions in different stations of the labs after classifying the type of reaction based on the reactants Students will answer response questions Any students who do not complete the lab today because of either attendance or no closed toe shoes will either complete a virtual lab or stay tomorrow after school, depending on the reason for missing the lab.
