1 Luise Strange de Soria Professor of Chemistry, Clarkston Campus 2017 CLUB ADVISOR OF THE YEAR NOMINATION (350 words) Luise not only advises TWO clubs at Clarkston, she s been with one since 1995 (Vietnamese Club) and founded the other in 2011 (). For this alone she deserves the award, which is reinforced by the outstanding array of club activities this year (and every year)! Atlanta Science Festival (March 15-25, 2017 community event) Luise organized club members to participate in this major annual event as an outreach initiative to local school students, which reinforces Perimeter College s commitment to civic engagement. The club conducted five chemistry experiments to engage students with how interesting and important science is. They had over 90 participants! National Chemistry Week (Solving Mysteries through Chemistry, October 16-22, 2016) Luise and the club organized two campus activities to promote the club and the field of science. Determining an unknown white powder Writing a secret message and then displaying it by spraying a solution on the paper (acid/base reaction) Periodic Table of Cupcakes (interactive campus activity) Luise knows how to make science fun (and tasty)! With plain cupcakes and tubes of colored frosting, students add chemical symbols to make the table. It s an engaging activity for students who try to remember their favorite element. Halloween Chemistry Activity (campus exhibit) Luise also knows how to connect science to real life events, like holidays! For Halloween, the club had an oozing pumpkin (with elephant toothpaste), a smoking pumpkin (with dry ice), and slime. Club Breakfast (Fall & Spring) Luise organizes the once-a-semester event as a fun get-together for members to fellowship over omelets, waffles, French toast, muffins, etc., and also to encourage prospective members to participate. Vietnamese Club Lunar New Year Festival (club sponsored campus activity Spring 2017) Luise and the club provided food and organized activities, included a traditional game with dice and a chopsticks race. International Festival (joint campus activity Spring 2017) Luise is also good at networking with other clubs. The Vietnamese Club worked with Clarkston s International Club on this annual event. Photos A picture can paint a thousand words. Check out the supporting documents below with photos of club members and activities.

4 March 15 th 25 th, 2017 Clarkston Campus Directions & Questions for Activities March 21 st, 2017 Name(s): #1 Iodine Clock Put container A on the stir plate. Pour the contents of container B into container A. Watch for changes in color. 1) What type of reaction can change between colors like this one does? 2) Do you think if you add more of reagents A & B, will the color change occur faster or last longer? Why or why not? #2 Cinnamonaldehyde Put container A on the stir plate. Pour the contents of container B into container A. Watch for changes in color. 1) What terms would you use to describe these colors? Write as many as you can in the space. 2) Do you think this is the same type of reaction that is in the iodine clock? Why or why not? #3 Chameleon Reaction Put container A on the stir plate. Pour the contents of container B into container A. Watch for changes in color. 1) How many different colors do you see? 2) Why do you think this is nicknamed the chameleon reaction? 3) The reagents in this reaction are sugar and sodium hydroxide and KMnO4. What is causing the color changes? #4 Luminol: We will be turning out the lights for this experiment (luminol glows in the dark). Be ready to mix solutions A & B together as we have done previously, and we will turn the lights off once everyone is ready. 1) What color was your luminol glowing? 2) Does anybody know what luminol is usually used for?
