1 MCQ For Science & Technology C h a p t e r at G l a n c e 1. In earlier attempts, the elements were classified on the basis of their properties. Dobereiner was the first scientist to show the relationship between the properties of elements and their atomic masses. Dobereiner showed that in triads atomic masses of the middle element is approximately equal to the arithmetic mean of the atomic masses of other two elements. Newlands Law of Octaves : When elements are arranged in increasing order of their atomic weights, the properties of the eighth element are similar to the first. Mendeleev's Periodic Law : The physical and chemical properties of elements are periodic function of their atomic masses. Mendeleev had left three vacant spaces in his periodic table, for undiscovered elements and predicted their properties. Three such unknown elements were named as Eka-boron, Eka-aluminium and Eka-silicon. These elements after discovery were named as scandium, gallium and germanium respectively. The Modern Periodic Law states that "the chemical and physical properties of elements are periodic function of their atomic numbers". The Modern Periodic Table consists of seven periods and eighteen groups. Metals are present on the left hand side of the periodic table, whereas non-metals are present on the right hand side of the periodic table. Elements in the Modern Periodic table are classified on the basis of their electronic configuration. They are divided into four blocks : s-block, p-block, d-block and f-block. Based on the electronic configuration elements are classified as Normal elements, Transition elements, Inner transition elements and Inert elements. The properties which show gradual variation in a group and in a period and they repeat themselves after a certain interval of atomic number are called periodic properties. Valency : All the elements of a group have the same number of valence electrons. Therefore, they have same valency. Atomic size : Atomic size increases in a group from top to bottom. In a period atomic size decreases from left to right. Metallic and Non-metallic properties : Metallic character decreases and non-metallic character increases from left to right in a period. In a group, metallic character increases and non-metallic character decreases from top to bottom.
