Phone: veakpambang@futa.edu.ng COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is an inorganic chemistry course and it focuses mainly on the chemistry of the fourteen elements after lanthanum, regarded as the lanthanides; and the fourteen elements after actinium known as the actinides. Topics to be covered include the inner transition elements and their position in the periodic table; their extraction; methods of preparation and uses; oxidation states; chemical properties; color and spectra properties; magnetic properties; size contraction and a comparison of the two series. COURSE OBJECTIVES The objective of this course is to introduce students to the chemistry of the inner transition elements and their usefulness in the real world. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES / COMPETENCIES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: know the chemistry of the Lanthanides and the Actinides understand the differences and similarities of the two groups of inorganic elements. 1

2 GRADING SYSTEM FOR THE COURSE This course will be graded as follows: Class Attendance 10% Assignments 10% Test(s) 20% Final Examination 60% TOTAL 100% GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Attendance: It is expected that every student will be in class for lectures and also participate in all assignments. Attendance records will be kept and used to determine each person s qualification to sit for the final examination. In case of illness or other unavoidable cause of absence, the student must communicate as soon as possible with the course lecturer, indicating the reason for the absence. Academic Integrity: Violations of academic integrity, including dishonesty in assignments, examinations, or other academic performances are prohibited. You are not allowed to make copies of another person s work and submit it as your own; that is plagiarism. All cases of academic dishonesty will be reported to the University Management for appropriate sanctions in accordance with the guidelines for handling students misconduct as spelt out in the Students Handbook. Assignments and Group Work: Students are expected to submit assignments as scheduled. Failure to submit an assignment as at when due will earn you zero for that assignment. Only under extenuating circumstances, for which a student has notified the course lecturer in advance, will late submission of assignments be permitted. Code of Conduct in the Lecture Room: Students should turn off their cell phones during lectures. Freeman and company, New York ISBN COURSE OUTLINE Week Topic Remarks 1 Introduction and Course Overview Lanthanides: position in periodic table The students are encouraged to know the lanthanide elements in order of increasing atomic number. 2 & 3 Lanthanides abundance, extraction and uses oxidation states chemical properties 4 & 5 Lanthanides color and spectra magnetic properties size contraction During this class students will appreciate the effect of the 4forbitals on the properties of the lanthanides. 6 Actinides introduction position in the periodic table 7 & 8 Actinides abundance, extraction and uses oxidation states chemical properties The students are encouraged to know the actinide elements in order of increasing atomic number Groups of students will be requested to prepare seminar presentations on the different aspects of the course as assignment. They shall present such at a later date. 9 & 10 Actinides color and spectra Size contraction magnetic properties MID-SEMESTER TEST 3

This shall be scored. 13 & 14 Comparison of the two series as regards position in the periodic table abundance, extraction and uses oxidation states chemical properties color and spectra magnetic properties Comparison of the two groups helps the students to recognise the differences and similarities of the inner transition elements. 15 REVISION This is the week preceding the final examination. End of semester test shall be administered. 5
