8 PREF REFACE Engineering Chemistry has been prepared exactly as per the latest syllabus prescribed by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. In this book, various topics are precisely explained, giving examples and figures wherever necessary. This book is aimed at imparting the required knowledge for understanding the importance of chemistry in the field of engineering. The fundamental aspects of Osmosis, Electrochemistry, Corrosion, Polymers, Fuels were dealt with in a comprehensive way. Emphasis was given to the advanced topics like Nano-materials, Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), Fullerenes, Liquid Crystals, Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP), Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP), Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics, Bullet proof plastics, Biodegradable polymers, Conducting polymers, Solar cells, Solar panel, Green House Concept, Green chemistry, Cement comparative studies were also presented in the form of tables showing the differences between certain similar types of aspects. We have done our job with great care and caution. However, there may be some printing errors, we request the teachers of Engineering Chemistry, to kindly inform us to correct them. Suggestions for further improvement will be highly appreciated and thankfully acknowledge. Authors (ix)
9 ACKNO CKNOWLEDGEMENT WLEDGEMENTS It is indeed our privilege and duty to thank Sri Sunkara Rama Brahmam, Chairman, Sri Sunkara Anil Kumar and Sri Sunkara Ajay, Secretary and Correspondents of Usha Rama College of Engineering and Technology (URCET), Telaprolu (Krishna District), without their encouragement, this might not have seen the light of the day. We feel it is great pleasure in expressing our gratitude to the Principal, Dr G.V.K.S.V. Prasad, Usha Rama College of Engineering and Technology, Telaprolu (Krishna District), for his never ending inspiration and encouragement in our effort. We feel happy to acknowledge the valuable suggestions and support extended by Dr T.S.R. Prasad Rao, Retd. Director, Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun, Dr K.S. Rama Rao, Dr A. Venu Gopal, Dr N. Lingaiah, Dr P. Laxmi Kantham, Director, IICT, Hyderabad. We sincerely thanks to our colleagues and friends for their valuable suggestions and moral support. We are very much obliged to our family members for their constant support, without which it would have been impossible to complete this task. We extend our sincere thanks for other references and their authors. Finally we extend our gratitude to Laxmi Publications and their staff for their efforts without which the book could not have taken this shape today. Authors (x)
10 SYLLABUS ENGINEERING CHEMISTR HEMISTRY UNIT 1: WATER TECHNOLOGY Hard Water Estimation of hardness by EDTA method Potable water Sterilization and Disinfection Boiler feed water Boiler troubles Priming and foaming, scale formation, corrosion, caustic embrittlement, turbine deposits Softening of water Lime soda, Zeolite processes Reverse osmosis Electrodialysis, Ion exchange process. Objectives: For prospective engineers knowledge about water used in industries (boilers etc.) and for drinking purposes is useful; hence chemistry of hard water, boiler troubles and modern methods of softening hard water is introduced. UNIT 2: ELECTROCHEMISTRY Concept of Ionic Mobilities Applications of Kohlrausch law Conductometric titrations Galvanic cells Electrode potentials Nernst equation Electrochemical series Potentiometric titrations Concentration cells Ion selective electrode: Batteries and Fuel cells. Objectives: Knowledge of galvanic cells, electrode potentials, concentration cells is necessary for engineers to understand corrosion problem and its control ; also this knowledge helps in understanding modern biosensors, fuel cells and improve them. UNIT 3: CORROSION Causes and effects of corrosion theories of corrosion (dry, chemical and electrochemical corrosion) Factors effecting corrosion Corrosion control methods Cathode protection Sacrificial Anodic, Impressed current methods Surface coatings Methods of application on metals (Hot dipping, Galvanizing, tinning, Cladding, Electroplating, Electroless plating) Organic surface coatings Paints Their constituents and their functions. Objectives: The problems associated with corrosion are well known and the engineers must be aware of these problems and also how to counter them. UNIT 4: HIGH POLYMERS Types of Polymerization Stereopolymers Physical and Mechanical properties of polymers Plastics Thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics Compounding and Fabrication of plastics Preparation and properties of Polyethylene, PVC and Bakelite Elastomers Rubber and Vulcanization Synthetic rubbers Styrene butadiene rubber Thiokol applications. Objectives: Plastics are materials used very widely an engineering materials. An understanding of properties particularly physical and mechanical properties of polymers/plastics/ elastomers helps in selecting suitable materials for different purpose. (xi)
