Gas particles move in a straight line until they collide with the walls of their container or another gas molecule. At that point, the gas particles change directions and continue along a different straight-line path. If a gas is contained, the particles fill the container regardless of the shape and/or volume of the container. If the gas is not contained, the particles can diffuse into space without limit. All collisions are perfectly elastic. That is, when one gas particle collides with another gas particle, all of its kinetic energy is transferred, so the total kinetic energy remains constant.
