11 Discovery of silicene a novel silicon two-dimensional allotrope P. Vogt, P. De Padova et al. PRL, 2012, 108, The seminal article Silicene: Compelling Experimental Evidence for Graphenelike Two- Dimensional Silicon, P. Vogt, P. De Padova, C. Quaresima, J. Avila, E. Frantzeskakis, M. C. Asensio, A. Resta, B. Ealet, and G. Le Lay, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, (2012), describes, at variance with the general belief on the impossibility of sp 2 like hybridization of silicon or the naive conception of a simple copy of graphene, the first experimental realization of silicene, supported by advanced theoretical calculations, in its archetype phase on a silver substrate. It is cited 765 times according to the Web Of Science on (1014 times according to Google Scholar). According to PRL, from the day it was published on 12/04/2012, to 23/02/2016, it is ranked 2nd of 1578 Editors Suggestions and 4th of most cited PRL papers. Noteworthy is that less than three years after its publication, the first silicene field effect transistors have been made by the groups of D. Akinwande and A. Molle Silicene field-effect transistors operating at room temperature L. Tao, E. Cinquanta, D Chiappe, C. Grazianetti, M. Fanciulli, M. Dubey, A. Molle and D.
