9 Institute of Structure of Matter Knoweldge & Innovation The Institute with its 121 people is devoted to cutting-edge research at the intersection of physics, chemistry and material science. The activities span from the modelling to the construction of prototypal devices via the study of basic processes, preparation and funtionalization of materials, characterization of their structure and electronic properties and the development of new instrumentation and methods. Asensio, A. Resta, B. Ealet, and G. Le Lay, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, (2012), describes, at variance with the general belief on the impossibility of sp 2 like hybridization of silicon or the naive conception of a simple copy of graphene, the first experimental realization of silicene, supported by advanced theoretical calculations, in its archetype phase on a silver substrate. It is cited 765 times according to the Web Of Science on (1014 times according to Google Scholar). According to PRL, from the day it was published on 12/04/2012, to 23/02/2016, it is ranked 2nd of 1578 Editors Suggestions and 4th of most cited PRL papers. Noteworthy is that less than three years after its publication, the first silicene field effect transistors have been made by the groups of D. Akinwande and A.
