In addition to the baery research, involve more other related subjects, such as supercapacitor, solar cells, fuel cells (Selvasekarapandian, MRC, India). GOAL: MRS-INA MEMBER OF IU-MRS? 2.INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ON SOLID STATE IONICS (BATTERY SCHOOL) Following the ICMST2014, the International School on Solid State Ionics or Battery School was held from 15 to 16 October The lecturers were delivered by 20 international experts on solid state ionics and battery research who came from Singapore, Australia, Japan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Taiwan and Indonesia. The plenary lectures were held in the morning at the Auditorium Building 71, followed by experiments at the Integrated Battery Laboratory, Batan. We should thank the Ministry Research and Technology

6 Indonesia for providing us completed battery equipments. This event shows how important the advanced materials for green energy and green economy. The nuclear application such as neutron scattering is very important tool to investigate the structure and existence of the lithium-ion in rechargeable lithium battery. The term of solid state ionics is refer to solid electrolyte and their uses. The solid electrolytes (also termed as superionic solids or fast ion conductors) are characterized by high electrical conductivity, comparable to concentrated liquid electrolytes or even molten salt electrolyte. The solid state ionic materials can be in form of ceramics, glasses, polymers, composites and nano-scale material. Recently, the science and technology of solid state ionic materials is rapidly changing the development of solid state power source. Solid state batteries, for example, have developed remarkably owing to improvements in basic science and technology. In particular, a greater encouragement has been placed in developing and commercializing small, lightweight, and highly energetic solid state power source driven by demands from portable consumer electronics, medical technology and electric vehicle. In order to share the basic knowledge and to motivate young scientists and future scientists (grad and undergrad students) to get interested in solid state ionics energy materials research and technology, an international school on the solid state ionics has been arranged in conjunction with the International conference on Materials Science and Technology 2014 (ICMST 2014)

7 The school is organized into several activities. 1. A series of lectures on Solid State Ionics and applications. These are comprehensive discussion on research and development on materials for energy storage led by leaders in their field of expertise, lecture and workshop on the solid state ionics for young scientists and students. The lecture will include characterizations by advanced neutron scattering technique. 2. Introduction and experimental work on material battery preparation, battery assembly and testing (coin, pouch, and cylinder) at the integrated battery laboratory. Understanding the phenomena of ionic conductor via the impedance spectroscopy theory, experiment and analysis, as well as the in-situ charge discharge battery experiment by x-ray diffraction. The future thin film battery prepared by PLD is also shown, with the AFM to characterize the surface of thin film. 3. Visit the Integrated nuclear laboratory, namely the Research Reactor RSG Sywabessy, BATAN, Serpong and the neutron facilities at the Center for Science and Technology of Advanced Materials. In order to give more understanding to the participants, the lectures were divided into two parts, first day was more general on battery, basic application and theory etc. For examples, the first lecture was given by Prof. EvvyKartini (BATAN, Indonesia) on General lecture on Li-ion Battery, followed by the Solid Electrolyte Interface given by Prof. Fu Ming Wang (NSTU, Taiwan), and the ion dynamics by Prof. T.Sakuma (Ibaraki University, Japan). Prof. Careem (UKM, Malaysia/PGIS Sri-Lanka) delivered basic understanding of impedance spectroscopy, followed by the example of Polymer electrolyte by Prof. Selvasekarapandian (MRC, India). The development of Lithium Sulfur battery was given by Dr. Prasa Rao (NUS, Singapore). The application of battery in industry was given by Dr. Patrick Chan (MTI, Malaysia). Review on Electrode Materials was given by Dr. Reddy (NUS, Singapore). In order to make participants understand, the hand on experiments on the first day was on battery preparation and assembly for pouch, coin and cylinder; and one basic measurement on impedance spectroscopy. The participants (that more than 90) were limited to 60 who could attend the experiment. The five groups, were selected and learnt how to prepare the battery component, cathode and anode, and they were introduced how to assembly them into several forms of batteries. Each group was asked to prepare one coin and one pouch cell, that to be tested at the second day on Battery testing experiment. Within 45 minutes for each set experiments, the participants found that was too short time. This will be evaluated in the future. The second day lectures, was more on the advanced technology for battery research. Prof. Takashi Kamiyama (KEK, Japan) introduced the neutron scattering from spallation neutron source and its application for battery research. The uniqueness of neutron that visible to light atom such as lithium and hydrogen, gives advantages compared with x-ray diffraction, since it will tell the location of lithium atoms and their mobilities in the crystal structures. Prof. Shane Kennedy (Bragg Institute, Australia), explained in more detail on the neutron source from reactor and its application for study kinetic, dynamic and structure of the ionics materials, as well as for metal hydirides. Furthermore, Prof. Stefan

8 Adams (NUS, Singapore) explained about the Bond-Valence method for detection of the lithium cage in the solid ionics materials. Dr. Yukinobu Kawakita, explained the complementary x-ray and neutron for studying the solid-liquid state of ionic salts CuI. Dr. Mikhael (UI/Panalytical, Indonesia) explained the characterization by x-ray diffraction for in-situ temperature dependence and in situ measurements during charge and discharge of Li-ion battery. In those lectures, we expected that the participants can do further analysis by using more advanced technology such as neutron scattering, x-ray diffraction from national and /or synchrotron radiation. They can do more exploration by modelling the structure or in-situ battery. To this knowledge, mostly participants came from various field, with little basic on battery and neutron scattering, therefore after they performed battery testing, and characterization by x-ray diffraction, they continued the tour to the Research Reactor, RSG Sywabessy. One of the participants, who represented at the meeting. MRs.Hamidah from ITS, Surabaya, mentioned that this battery school was very good, interesting, important, and finally she fell in love with neutron after knowing how important this tool for perfoming and understanding the battery research. This is also one of the goal of noth only Interantional society of solid state ionics, Asian society of solid state ionics to introduce the important of solid ionics materials and its applications, but also the Asian Oceania neutron scattering association (AONSA) to introduce the neutron for the other society or publics. Participants from industry, such as Auto Part, ASTRA, was interested also on performing the experiment by neutron. Some of those participants are also willing to join the collaboration on battery research and also to conduct their thesis at the integrated battery laboratory. More participants from other national laboratories have also chanced to exchange their expertise with others from international laboratories, opening new collaborations. It is hoped that this school will bring mutual benefits to all parties, and indeed it was very successful and well organized meeting, with high qualified lecturers. GOAL: (a) INTRODUCING SOLID STATE IONICS TO THE ASIA-AUSTRALIA REGION (b) BRIDGING BATTERY SCHOOL AND NEUTRON SCATTERING 2.2.FOCUS GROUP DISCUSSION ON BATTERY RESEARCH GOAL: FUTURE INDONESIA BATTERY RESEARCH INSTITUTE AONSA ACTIVITIES
