Taher Dakorwala General Manager R&D and Intellectual Property Management Gharda Chemicals Limited Dombivli BSc (Tech ) Pharmaceuticals & Fine Chemicals, UDCT Matunga Diploma in Intellectual Property Management, Geneva Sweden Intensive IPR course at University of Tokyo & JPO. JAPA Registered Patent Agent Indian Patent Office. tsdakorwala@gharda.com
GHARDA CHEMICALS LTD. Established in 1967 by Dr. K.H. Gharda. Business Agrochemicals, Pigments & Polymers One of the top 5 Indian crop protection chemical manufactures Manufacturing locations Dombivli & Lote Parshuram in Maharashtra, Ankleshwar & Panoli in Gujarat and Jammu (Sambha Dt.) in Jammu & Kashmir. R&D focused ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO and OHSAS certified
Green Chemistry Carrying out chemical activities, including design, manufacture, applications and waste management. Tool in accomplishing Pollution Prevention & control Encompasses all aspects and types of chemical processes to reduce impacts
Areas of Research Feedstock's / Starting Materials Reagents or Transformations Reaction Conditions Final Product inter-related, separated for incremental improvements
Alternative Reagents Assessment of the hazard of reagent Evaluation of synthetic transformation associated with use of specific reagents determine product sensitivity reaction efficiency Improve reaction efficiency Reduce needed quantity eg. Choose catalytic reagent to stoichiometric reagent
Alternative Reaction Conditions Reduce or eliminate solvents used in reaction media, separations, formulations Use aqueous solvent systems in place of organic solvents in chemical manufacturing Reduce operating temperatures Must evaluate impact on case by case basis
GREE CHEMISTRY - Implementation 1. The preparation of pigment violet 23 with use of air (enriched with oxygen) as ring closure agents. The novel process is improvement to make PV 23. Indian Patent applied in 2010 ( Priority: 1910/MUM/2010 dt & 1738/MUM/2011 dt ) followed by PCT application on 29 June 2011 ( Application o. PCT/I2011/ Date of Filing: 29 June 2011, assigned to GSRF / Inventors Dr K H Gharda & T S Dakorwala). The compound of formula II is cyclized in an inert organic solvent, using a cyclizing agent such as air and/or oxygen to form a dioxazine compound. O Cl H R Air or Oxygen R O Cl H Cl O R Metal salt catalyst Cl O R Formula II Dioxazine Compound
Advantages of the new process: Elimination of cyclisation agents such as benzenesulfonyl chloride, 4-toluenesulfonyl chloride, nitro- or chloro substituted benzenesulfonyl chloride, chloranil, chlorine or pyridine -oxide Elimination of polluting sulfur containing residue compounds in the final product ( Earlier process had HIGH RESIDUE ) Filtration at a lower temperature Avoids washing with surplus quantity, reducing load of solvent recycle
GREE CHEMISTRY- Implementation 2. PR A novel process for the preparation of Quinacridone pigment - PR122. The process has been Patented (assigned to Gharda Chemicals Limited / Inventors Dr Gharda Keki H, Dakorwala Taher S, Janardhanan K K. Application o. 2297/MUM/2008 A. Date of Filing: 24/10,2008, Publication date 10/12/2010, R&D lab trials started in 2008, followed by Pilot Plant batches in 2011, plant commissioning trials in Use of aryl or alkyl sulfonic acids instead of Phosphoric acid
Advantages of the new process: Elimination of polluting phosphorous containing residue compounds Avoids washing with surplus quantity of solvent, reducing load of solvent recycle Filtration at low temperature at C with water as solvent
AWARDS - GREE CHEMISTRY Awarded to Gharda Chemicals Ltd. in 2011 & 2013 by IGCW
Conclusion Product and Process developments to continue in Green chemistry for pollution less environment Green chemistry research conducted in labs in academia, industry, and government around the world Aims for minimum resource loss and maximum health care of livings
knowledge converted through products to wealth for the good of society Earn a lot but, very honestly live economically, spend generously and maximally for the community around, especially under privileged ones Dr K H Gharda In this century, a company s future standing will be determined by its ability to comply to the above statements.
