Aminabhavi: a biobibliometric study Parvathamma N a and Devendra S. Gobbur b a Professor, Department of Library & Information Science, Gulbarga University, Gulbarga , parvathi_glb@yahoo.co.in b Assistant Librarian, Gulbarga University Library, Gulbarga Reveals that in his 36 years of teaching and 28 years of research experience in various fields of polymer science, T M Aminabhavi has published 521 research articles, 57 popular articles and 94 conference papers in eight domains of polymer science. He has three US patents to his credit and has completed research projects worth Rs.Six crores. He has one book to his credit, published by John Wiley. Collaboration coefficient is between 0.9 and 1.0 indicating the interdisciplinary nature of his research. The year 2006 has been the most productive year in his research career wherein he has published 96 research papers. The period of international collaboration is significant with W.E. Rudzinski (22 years), Patrick E. Cassidy (15 years), J.D. Ortego (12 years) and T.H.S. Phayde (05 years). Indian collaborators with more than 15 years of association are Manjeshwar (21 years), S.B. Halligudi (19 years) and M.I. Aralaguppi (16 years) in the above mentioned domains of research. Journal of Applied Polymer Science, published in USA has been the most preferred journal for publishing his research findings (102 research articles) % of his research articles are published in the journals originating from USA (326 articles %) and India (61 articles %). Introduction A biobibliometric study deals with the bibliographical study of the individual careers of scientists and researchers and correlates the bibliographical analysis of publications with their academic / scientific achievements. Earlier, a number of biobibliometric studies have been conducted in India on eminent persons The present study has been undertaken to illustrate the achievements of Tejraj M. Aminabhavi through bibliographical analysis of his research contributions. Tejraj M. Aminabhavi was born on January 16, 1947 at Gadag in Karnataka State, India. He completed his early education in Gadag and later in Dharwad. Presently, he is serving as the Director of Centre of Excellence in Polymer Science, Karnatak University, Dharwad, India. He has 36 years of teaching experience and 28 years of research experience. During this time, he has associated with a number of prestigious universities in USA, France, South Korea and Taiwan. He has 521 research articles to his credit, published in reputed national and international journals with high impact factor. Interdisciplinary nature of his research work is reflected in his collaboration with faculty from various disciplines, working in prestigious institutions. He has made significant contribution in the field of polymer science in eight domains, viz., polymer solution thermodynamics, molecular transport through polymer membranes, polymers in drugs and pesticide delivery, polymer membranes in pervaporation separation, molecular modeling, polymer composites / polymer synthesis / polymer reviews, thermodynamics of liquid mixture, and coordination chemistry. Objectives of the study Main objectives of the present study were to analyze the data under following headings: 1. domainwise productivity of research articles, 2. contribution of popular articles and conference papers, 3. authorship pattern and collaboration coefficient, 4. chronological distribution of research articles vs authorship position, 5. domainwise collaboration,

Methodology Complete information about the academic and research achievements of T.M. Aminabhavi was collected. T.M. Aminabhavi has published 521 research articles in 28 years of his research career, i.e. during 1979 to In addition, he has 94 conference papers, 57 popular articles and a textbook in polymer science to his credit. The data were analyzed to meet the objectives of the study. Discussion Domainwise productivity of research articles Table 1 shows domainwise productivity of research articles by T.M. Aminabhavi during Maximum number of research articles (137 articles 26.29%) was published in the domain of molecular transport through polymer membranes, followed by 104 articles (19.96%) in thermodynamics of liquid mixtures. Polymers in drug and pesticide delivery (91 articles 17.46%) and polymer membranes in pervaporation separation (64 articles 12.28%) are the other two domains where significant contributions have been made. That is, 76% of the total research articles were published in these four domains of polymer science. T.M. Aminabhavi has single-authored eight research articles in three domains, while the remaining 513 papers were co-authored with scientists from India and other countries. Two, three and four authored articles constitute 82.3% of the total research articles published. Collaboration coefficient is between 0.9 and 1.0 in all the domains. This indicates that the collaborative trend is near total in all the domains. Average number of authors per paper is 3.3.

Collaboration coefficient is 0.94 in both the types of publications. Average authorship per paper is 3.38 and 3.22 for popular articles and conference papers, respectively. Chronological distribution of research articles T.M. Aminabhavi published his first research article in 1979 and latest research article in 2006, between 32 and 59 years of age. He has published maximum of 96 research articles (18.43%) in He has consistently published between 20 and 27 articles during He is either the second, third or the fourth author in 423 papers (81.19%) (Table 4). Domainwise collaboration 1656 researchers have collaborated with T.M. Aminabhavi in 521 research papers during the 28 years of his research career ( ). Table 5 shows the list of collaborators and the years of collaboration. Large number of collaborators is found in the domains of molecular transport through polymer membranes, polymers in drug and pesticide delivery, thermodynamics of liquid mixtures and polymer membranes in pervaporation separation. Aminabhavi has published 291 papers (23%) with first five authors between 1981 and The period of international collaboration is significant with W.E. Aralaguppi (16 years). Core journals used to publish research articles Table 6 shows that largest number of research articles were published in the journal, Journal of Applied Polymer Science (102 articles 19.6%). 368 research papers (70.63%) were published in 19 journals. Among these 19 journals, 13 are being published in USA. Remaining 153 papers were published in 75 journals. Countrywise distribution of journals Table 7 shows countrywise distribution of journals in which 521 research articles were published. A majority of 326 articles (62.57%) were published in journals of USA, followed by Indian journals, with 61 papers
