3 GETTING STARTED AGAIN START MINITAB & OPEN A WORKSHEET

4 CREATE THE EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN To design an expeirment to test three factors: time, temperature, and type of catalyst STAT DOE FACTORIAL FACTORIAL DESIGN Select Display Available Designs

5 AVAILABLE DESIGNS: USE THIS TABLE TO SELECT AN APPROPRIATE DESIGN BASED ON: The number of factors that are of interest The number of runs you can afford in the experiment The desired resolution of the design

6 OPTIONS FOR THIS EXPERIMENT: The more appropriate design for this experiment is a full factorial design yields results that show effects distinguishable from all other effects since the factors (time, temperature, and type of catalyst are not expensive or time-consuming and can be performed at a non-peak work period. 1 a fractional factorial design of resolution III with 4 runs or 2 a full factorial design with 8 runs Click OK once you have viewed available design options

7 THE 2-LEVEL FACTORIAL Choose 2-level factorial Number of factors 3 Click Designs In Designs box, select Full Factorial In Number of Replicates, choose 2 Click OK Select Factors in Main Dialogue Box

8 NAME FACTORS AND SET FACTOR LEVELS Factor setting can be entered as either text or numeric Continuous variables can take on any value (ie., length of reaction time) Categorical values can only assume a limited number of variables (ie., type of catalyst) When setting factors, choose them as far apart as possible within the limits of safety After setting factors, click OK to return to the main dialogue box

9 RANDOMIZE AND STORE DESIGN In Main Dialogue Box, Click OPTIONS Enter 9 as a base generator. Entering a base for a random generator allows control of the randomizations so that you get the same pattern each time. Click the box to Store Design in the Worksheet Click OK to go back to the Main Dialogue Box and Click OK again to Generate the design and store it in the worksheet

10 VIEW THE DESIGN MINITAB reserves C1 and C2 for Std Order and Run Order C3 stores the Center Point Indicators C4 stores Block Number C5 C7 are the Factor Columns (actual levels shown in the worksheet)

11 COLLECT AND ENTER DATA IN THE WORKSHEET Type Yield in the name field of C8 Choose: FILE PRINT WORKSHEET (Make sure Print Gridlines is checked) Now, type the observed yields into the YIELDS column of the data window

13 NORMAL PLOT OF STANDARDIZED EFFECTS Active effects are the effects that are significant or important. Points that do not fit the line well usually signal active effects which are larger and further from the fitted line. Inactive effects tend to be smaller and centered around the mean of all the effects

14 PARETO CHART OF THE STANDARDIZED EFFECTS Another useful tool to determine which effects are active:

15 FIT A REDUCED MODEL ~SCREENING OUT THE UNIMPORTANT EFFECTS Residual Analysis STAT DOE FACTORIAL ANALYZE FACTORIAL DESIGNS Click TERMS Set Up the Model You Want to Fit Choose 2 from Include terms in the model up through order Click on A:Temp in the selected terms, then the add arrow Repeat these steps to move the AB and AC to the available terms box Click OK Click OK again to go back to the main dialogue box

16 SELECTING THE NEW GRAPHS Click Graphs (UNCHECK Normal and Pareto) Check Histogram, Normal Plot, Residual versus fits, and residual versus order Click OK to return to main dialogue box, then click OK again The Output will display in the session window

19 EVALUATE THE REDUCED MODEL Look at the values in the P column If all terms have p-values less than the α level appropriate for the experiment then you have a good model. Here, all the p-values are less than 0.05; therefore, this is a good model

20 DRAW CONCLUSIONS Display the factorial plots Choose: STAT DOE FACTORIAL FACTORIAL PLOTS Check Main Effects and click Setup

21 In responses, type yield Select the terms to be plotted Move Pressure and Catalyst to the selected boc Check Interaction Click setup Click OK in the Main Factorial Plots dialog box to display each plot

22 EVALUATE THE PLOTS This point shows the mean of all runs where pressure is at the high setting. This point shows the mean of all runs where pressure is at the low setting. This line shows the mean of the values of the response (Yield) in the experiment

23 INTERPRETATION This point is the mean of all Yields at the first setting of Catalyst A

24 SAVE AND EXIT Choose File Save Project. In File name, enter SS5DOE for the name of your project. If you omit the extension.mpj, MINITAB will automatically add it once you save the project. Click Save. If you see a message box asking if you want to replace an existing file, click Yes. File Exit
