Changes in Matter Study Guide Define the following and give a real world example: 1. : A change in matter that requires the substances to absorb energy Example: Photosynthesis (the plants absorb light energy to make food) 2. : A change in matter the requires the substance to release energy Example: Fireworks exploding (light, heat and sound are released when the fireworks explode) 3. Physical Property: A characteristic that describes a substance without changing its makeup Example: The shape of the table is square 4. Chemical Property: A characteristic that describes how a substance can change into a new substance. Example: sodium reacts with water 5. Chemical Change: A change in matter that results in a new substance Example: When wood burns it turns into ash and smoke 6. Physical Change: A change in matter that does not change what the substance is made of Example: I cut the paper into smaller pieces
Tell if the change is endothermic or exothermic: 7. Melting ice cubes 8. Condensation of water vapor to rain 9. Melting solid salts 10. Forming molecules 11. A candle burning 12. Formation of snow in clouds 13. Mixing water with strong acids 14. Evaporation of water. 15. Freezing water 16. Sublimation of dry ice 17. Condensation of water 18. Photosynthesis 19. Fireworks Exploding
True (T) or False (F). If it is false, change the answer to true. 20. Changing the size and shapes of pieces of wood would be a chemical change. F Changing the size and shapes of pieces of wood would be a physical change 21. In a physical change, the makeup of matter is changed. F In a physical change, the makeup of matter is not changed. 22. Evaporation occurs when liquid water changes into a gas. T 23. Evaporation is a physical change. T 24. Burning wood is a physical change. F Burning wood is a chemical change 25. Combining hydrogen and oxygen to make water is a physical change. F Combining hydrogen and oxygen to make water is a chemical change. 26. Breaking up concrete is a physical change. T 27. Sand being washed out to sea from the beach is a chemical change. F Sand being washed out to sea from the beach is a physical change. 28. When ice cream melts, a chemical change occurs. F When ice cream melts, a physical change occurs. 29. Acid rain damaging a marble statue is a physical change F Acid rain damaging a marble statue is a chemical change
Chemical or physical change? Please Underline your evidence. 30. An ice cube is placed in the sun. Later there is a puddle of water. Later still the puddle is gone. Physical phase change 31. Two chemical are mixed together and a gas is produced. Chemical 32. A bicycle changes color as it rusts. Chemical 33. A solid is crushed to a powder. Physical shape change 34. Two substances are mixed and light is produced. Chemical 35. A piece of ice melts and reacts with sodium. Physical phase change and Chemical reacts 36. Mixing salt and pepper. Physical 37. Chocolate syrup is dissolved in milk. Physical 38. A marshmallow is toasted over a campfire. Chemical 39. A marshmallow is cut in half. Physical 40. Explain how heat and cold can affect a chemical reaction. Chemical changes can be slowed down by cold temperatures because the molecules are moving slower and slowing down the reaction. You can speed up a chemical reaction by adding heat to speed up the molecules. 41. Is breaking a glow stick a chemical or physical reaction? How do you know? Breaking a glow stick is a chemical reaction because once it is broken it releases light. The release of light indicates that a new substance forms which is a chemical change. 42. What is evidence of an endothermic reaction? Evidence of an endothermic reaction is heat decreasing, we observed this when we mixed baking soda and orange juice. During this process the temperature decreased inside the beaker. 43. What is evidence of an exothermic reaction? Evidence of an exothermic reaction is heat increasing, we observed this when we soaked steel wool in vinegar and the steel wool started to rust. During this process the
temperature inside of the beaker increased. Two other indicators of an exothermic reaction are the production of light and sound. Thank you Mrs. Horback!!! I love you!!!
