3 Description of Class: Chemistry is the study of composition, reactivity, properties and reactivity of matter. The first part of the course includes mastery of topics in measurement, dimensional analysis, classification of matter, chemical structure, chemical formula and equation writing, and stoichiometry. The remainder of the semester is spent in a survey of physical applications to chemical systems including gas laws, kinetic theory, solutions, equilibrium, acids and bases, and nuclear chemistry with emphasis world applications. Class Approach: Science should be interactive and hands on and that is how our classes will be structured. Students will be expected to complete the assigned reading ahead of time so that class time can be dedicated to lectures, conversations, exercises, virtual labs and experiments. Goals: 1. Understand and be able to explain the general principles, laws, and theories of chemistry that are discussed and presented throughout the semester 2. Use critical thinking and logic in the solution of problems 3. Apply learned chemistry skills to new situations 4. Demonstrate an understanding of chemistry through technological advancement 5. Apply chemical principles in the laboratory setting 6. Develop an awareness of the value of chemistry in our daily living Textbook: Modern Chemistry by Holt McDougal. ISBN Sarquis/dp/ /ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid= &sr=1-1&keywords= Additional Supplies/Resources Needed: Students are expected to come to class prepared with a pencil ruler eraser 3-ring binder with plastic sleeves a notebook a whiteboard with markers. Students should have a headset with microphone, a webcam, a computer and stable internet connection. Students need SAFETY GOGGLES for experiments.
4 Students should also have access to a calculator, preferably a scientific one. NOTE: Cell phones will not be allowed as calculators. Materials will be required for labs (will mostly be household materials) and you will be notified about these materials 1-2 weeks prior to the lab. Requirements: Students are expected to take part in class discussions and demonstrate a knowledge of the reading completed beforehand. Students will be asked to complete at home, open book quizzes, as well as a final exam. Students will be allowed to use their class notes, as well as the textbook. Students should not have access to the internet while completing these open book quizzes and the final exam. Weekly Homework: Weekly homework will vary however will average between 1-2 hours of reading, research etc. Homework Policy: Weekly homework will be due prior to class. Late assignments will be penalized 5% per day, for a maximum of 3 days. Late quizzes and exams will not be accepted. After 3 days, the student will not receive any marks for late homework. If you will have an issue meeting a deadline, please contact me to discuss. Additional Policies: Attendance is expected at all classes. There will be a strict zero-tolerance policy in regard to plagiarism and cheating. "Cheating" is defined as unauthorized help on an examination or assigned course material. A student must not receive from any other student or give to any other student any information, answers, or help during an exam. Plagiarism is defined as the taking of a person's ideas, words, or information and claiming those properties as one's own. The use of all ideas, words, or information from any source must be properly referenced and due credit must be given to its author. All cheating and plagiarism infractions will result in a grade of 0 for the assignment. Evaluation: Class Participation 10% Weekly assignments 20% Unit Tests 25% Mid-Term Exam 20% Final Exam 25%
