1 Name: Date: Period: Discovering Ionic Bonds Activity Lab Overview: In this lab, you will be building atoms and illustrating ionic bonds. You will be using M&M s and paper plates to build your atom. Materials: -M&M s (your electrons!) -paper plates Directions: Your lab group will be given 2 paper plates. On one plate you will build a Bohr model of a Lithium atom. On the other plate you will build a Bohr model of a Fluorine atom. 1. Fill out the missing data below for Lithium atom. 2. In small writing, label one plate Lithium 3. Draw a nucleus on the plate. Label the nucleus with how many protons and neutrons are in the nucleus 4. Draw the appropriate amount of electron energy shells on the plate 5. Create a circle for each space that an electron can fit in the electron energy shell (Remember !!) 6. Make sure that the circles are M&M-sized 7. Put the appropriate amount of M&M s on the electron energy shells.

2 Lithium Atom Build the electron shells of a Lithium atom, and fill out your data below. Number of valence shell electrons: Number of neutrons: Electron Dot Diagram for Valence Shell Electrons: 1. Fill out the missing data below for Fluorine atom. 2. In small writing, label one plate Fluorine 3. Draw a nucleus on the plate.
