CFI Website: bkmark it: immunlgy.umn.edu, if yu are a permanent member f the lab cntact Deb Lins(bens010@umn.edu) t get yur inf n the site. 4. IACUC and RAR training 1. Remind yur PI r lab manager t add yu t their animal prtcl (they will need yur X500 number and yur emplyee/student ID number fr this). This must be dne first!! N training will be allwed until yu are n a prtcl. 2. Cmplete the n-line Animal Use tutrial abut wrking with labratry animals at RAR Training. NOTE: a cpy f the dcumentatin that yu tk this training has t be kept in the lab as well, s please give a cpy f yur cmpletin certificate t the lab manager. 3. Enrll at Research Occupatinal Health Prgram (ROHP). Once yu register yu will receive an with further instructins. Fllw the link prvided in that . Make sure yu have had a tetanus sht within the last 10 years, it s als a gd idea t either have the clinic's name and phne numbers where sht was administered r a cpy f yur medical recrds fr submissin t ROHP. 4. G t Vet Services Training. Cmplete the apprpriate frms and sign up fr the apprpriate training sessins yu will need, see yur lab manager fr lab specific needs. Initial RAR Clearance & Facility Access (fr new staff). Applicatin fr U-Card Access t Additinal RAR facilities (fr changes needed after initial clearance abve) D nt fill this ut unless yu already have access 5. Yu ll need t set up an: RAR Orientatin,Facility Tur,Micrislatr Techniques: all training times are listed n a calendar at the bttm f the RAR Services page, under the Required Training sectin r call Ask fr a list f apprved prcedures perfrmed n mice in yur lab frm the lab manager s yu knw what ther training is needed. Get hands-n training frm ther lab persnnel r set up training with RAR persnnel. When cmpleted have the lab manager add yur training inf t RAR Training dcument. 7. If yu will als be wrking with BSL-2 agents, yu will need t be added t the apprpriate IBC prtcl. G t the IBC training site. Yu will need t launch the Bilgical Safety in the Labratry training mdule and cmplete this training. If yu will be wrking with recmbinant r synthetic nucleic acid mlecules yu will als need t cmplete the training under Implementatin f NIH guidelines.

HIPPA: Take the apprpriate nline 7. Lab Specific Training (checklist starts n page 3, all items may nt be cvered): This is dne by the lab manager and will include a lab tur and an pprtunity fr yu t ask sme questins regarding the specific lab practices. Sme questins yu might have: What is the lcatin and use f safety equipment (e.g. fire extinguishers, chemical hds, persnal prtective devices, safety shwers, eyewashes, first aid, circuit bx if pwer must be cut, phne fr calling 911)? Wh is respnsible fr answering any safety-related questins I may have while wrking here? What is the fastest rute ut f this building in case f fire? What is an alternative rute? What are the lab's specific prcedures fr discard f hazardus waste (chemical, radiatin, and bilgical)? D I have t take any additinal training curses (e.g. radiistpe training, infectius materials handling, bldbrne pathgen training) befre beginning wrk? Is there a list f equipment and materials with lcatins indicated fr this lab? If nt, wh shuld I talk t when I am lking fr smething? What are the lab's prcedures fr use f cmmn equipment and clean-up f shared space, equipment and materials? What and where are the water surces in this lab (i.e. distilled, deinized, ultrapure, tissue-culture grade)? Are there any ther lab rules, plicies, r prcedures I shuld be aware f? 8. Training fact sheets are available frm the Department f Envirnmental Health and Safety (DEHS) at They are als n the DEHS web site: Chemical Safety (MERTKA, OSHA, Lab Safety Standard) The physical and health hazards f chemicals in the labratry List f chemicals used in the lab (includes lcatin, ddc cdes and vendr infrmatin). Shw where Chemicals are stred in the lab and in the flammable, acid and base cabinets under the fume hds. Chemicals are stred by cmpatibility s after using a chemical please return it t its riginal lcatin (this infrmatin is n the list f chemicals). Permissible Expsure Limits Signs and symptms assciated with expsures t chemicals in the lab Methds and bservatins t detect presence r release f chemicals in the lab Measures emplyees can take t prtect themselves frm expsure Dn t wrk with hazardus r vlatile chemical materials when yu are alne. Liquid inrganic acids (DDC cde 02LI, i.e. Hydrchlric Acid, Sulfuric Acid) and liquid rganic acids (DDC cde 02LO, i.e. Acetic Acid, Frmic Acid, Glacial Acetic Acid) must be kept separate. These tw types f acids can prduce flames if mixed. All waste cntainers must have a yellw hazardus waste label n the cntainer and all chemical cmpnents f the waste must be written ut with nt chemical symbls used. Please include percentage r amunt f each cmpnent and include water if it is in the slutin. liquid wastes vlatile wastes

Physicalhazards and wrking safely: sharps and brken glass electrical- Separate electricity and water (r use grund fault circuit interrupters) fire- Wrk safely with fire r use an alternative. heat and steam- Be careful arund ht materials (autclaves, ht water baths, vens) clean up slippery flr surfaces chemical fumes D nt try t lift mre than yu are cmfrtably able t lift Use slid supprts fr reaching items abve yur head (never step n a chair with wheels) Radiatin hazards: nn-inizing radiatin hazards (e.g. ultravilet light) Inizing radiatin hazards: If yu wrk with radiistpes, yu will need further training n this tpic under the Radiatin Prtectin Standard (Nuclear Regulatry Cmmissin, NRC). Ask yur lab supervisr r call Radiatin Safety (a divisin f DEHS) at

5 Hw t prepare fr and prtect yurself in the lab: Knw the HAZARDS Fr chemicals: finding ut abut the hazards and hw t wrk with them: Knw where t find Labratry Safety Standard, Labratry Safety Plan, MSDS, labels, reference bks AND where each f these can be fund in the Cllege, department, and individual lab. Fr equipment: read warning labels n equipment measures t prtect yurself in the lab: d nt blck emergency equipment in yur lab reduce duratin and frequency f expsure (including using smaller vlumes) use prtective devices and knw where they are lcated use safety glasses/gggles/lab cats (PPE) glves (make sure t use prper type fr wrk being dne), pipetting devices fume hds, Sme pints t remember abut fume hds: 1. Use the fume hd fr all txic, vlatile, and flammable chemicals. 2. The fume hd nly wrks well if the sash is between yu and what yu are wrking n. Never use the sash abve its sash lck. The verride is nly there s yu can mve large equipment int and ut f the hd. 3. Even thugh the fume hds are checked regularly by DEHS, a fan belt can break anytime. Therefre yu shuld check that there is airflw int the hd befre each use. One way t d this is t keep a strip f tissue taped t the bttm ledge f the hd. A wrking fume hd shuld keep that tissue fluttering upward. 4. Air currents disrupt the efficiency f the fume hd s put hands in and wait befre beginning wrk, remve hands slwly s yu d nt draw the txic material ut with yu, dn t have peple walking behind yu r pening/clsing drs arund yu as yu are using the hd. **Check prtective devices (quarterly fume hd inspectin by DEHS, annual safety shwer inspectin by DEHS; weekly eyewash inspectin by labratry persnnel; annual fire extinguisher inspectin by DEHS) Prtective eyewear and liquid nitrgen glves must be wrn when remving samples frm the liquid nitrgen tank r when tank is refilled with liquid nitrgen. 6 Hw t handle an accident First evaluate severity f spill and persnnel invlved then get help (emergency numbers shuld be psted at the phne in the lab) Be sure yur lab has apprpriate materials and prtcls fr cleaning up spills (see Prudent Practices in the Labratry fr help). Basically, the respnse shuld be: Small Chemical spill: If the spill is within yur capabilities t clean up: Alert all wrkers in the area Cnfine the spill Clean-up the spill Dispse f the clean-up material apprpriately (e.g. thrugh HazWaste prcedures) Large chemical spill evacuate (alert thers, leave) cnfine (clse drs, islate the area, keep peple ut) reprt (6-6002; 911) secure (pst warning signs, pst staff arund area) wait fr DEHS/CWP t cmplete the clean-up bilgical hazard spill physical injury radiatin injury When an accident ccurs yu must reprt an accident t yur department and supervisr: incident frms are available in department ffices; fill them ut with yur supervisr as sn as yu can, turn them int department ffice Getting medical care: Byntn Health Services, yur health care prvider, and wrkman s cmpensatin issues (see Persnal Safety Fr mre infrmatin: DEHS ; DEHS website: American Chemical Sciety website: Emergency chemical spill respnse: during business hurs; 911 at ther times (On cell phne: yu can reach campus 911 with )
