1 Form 2B City University of Hong Kong Information on a Course offered by the Department of Physics and Materials Science with effect from Semester B in 2013 / 2014 Part I Course Title: Modern Scattering Methods in Materials Science Course Code: AP6180 Course Duration: One semester No of Credit Units: 3 Level: P6 Medium of Instruction: English Prerequisites: Nil Precursors: Nil Equivalent Courses: Nil Exclusive Courses: AP8180 Modern Scattering Methods in Materials Science Part II 1. Course Aims: This course covers a range of experimental and applied-physics topics and methods in science that involve X-ray and neutron scattering in the laboratory and as well as at large-scale facilities like at synchrotrons, at research nuclear-reactors, or at spallation neutron-sources. Its central aims are: (1) to describe the fundamentals of scattering by condensed matter, (2) to introduce the different commonly employed scattering techniques available in the laboratory and at large-scale facilities, (3) to show the possible applications in discovering advanced and (4) to motivate the students for discovery and innovation in applying scattering techniques in science. AP6180 1
2 2. Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: No CILOs Level of Importance 1 Explain the importance of modern scattering 2 techniques and their applications in material research. 2 Acquire the fundamental knowledge about different 3 scattering techniques with special emphasis on neutron diffraction. 3 Clarify the similarities and differences between X-ray 3 and neutron scattering. 4 Recognize the fundamental theory of scattering and its 3 application to study the structures of different classes of. 5 Apply the kinematical diffraction theory to 3 science problems. 6 Master the basic knowledge of small-angle-x-rayscattering 2 (SAXS) and small-angle-neutron-scattering (SANS) for determining the large-scale structure of 7 Describe the basics of inelastic-neutron-scattering (INS) and quasi-elastic-neutron-scattering (QENS) for being able to study the dynamics of liquids and soft 2 8 To observe specific case-studies for better 1 understanding the practical application of 1 to 7 Remarks: 1 is the least importance 3. Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs) (designed to facilitate students achievement of the CILOs) TLAs Lectures AP Laboratory demonstration Tutorials Total no of hours CILO CILO CILO CILO CILO CILO CILO CILO Total (hrs) Scheduled activities: 2 hrs lecture + 1 hr tutorial or laboratory, with the tutorial or laboratory following the completion of each lecture within a specific CILO The Lectures will be in the form of 2-hrs lectures each week, while the Tutorials and/or the "Laboratory demonstrations" will always follow the lectures.
3 4. Assessment Tasks/Activities (designed to assess how well the students achieve the CILOs) Examination duration: 2 hrs Percentage of coursework, examination, etc.: 60% by coursework; 40% by exam. ATs Assignment Laboratory Midterm Exam Final Exam Total (%) CILO CILO CILO CILO CILO CILO CILO CILO Total (%) Grading of Student Achievement: Refer to Grading of Courses in the Academic Regulations for Taught Postgraduate Degrees. The grading is assigned based on students performance in assessment tasks/activities. Grade A The student completes all assessment tasks/activities and the work demonstrates excellent understanding of the scientific principles and the working mechanisms. He/she can thoroughly identify and explain how the principles are applied to science and technology for solving physics and science problems. The student s work shows strong evidence of original thinking, supported by a variety of properly documented information sources other than taught. He/she is able to communicate ideas effectively and persuasively via written texts and/or oral presentation. Grade B The student completes all assessment tasks/activities and can describe and explain the scientific principles. He/she provides a detailed evaluation of how the principles are applied to science and technology for solving physics and science problems. He/she demonstrates an ability to integrate taught concepts, analytical techniques and applications via clear oral and/or written communication. Grade C The student completes all assessment tasks/activities and can describe and explain some scientific principles. He/she provides simple but accurate evaluations of how the principles are applied to science and technology for solving physics and science problems. He/she can communicate ideas clearly in written texts and/or in oral presentations. AP6180 3
4 Grade D The student completes all assessment tasks/activities but can only briefly describe some scientific principles. Only some of the analysis is appropriate to show how the principles are applied to science and technology for solving physics and science problems. He/she can communicate simple ideas in writing and/or orally. Grade F The student fails to complete all assessment tasks/activities and/or cannot accurately describe and explain the scientific principles. He/she fails to identify and explain how the principles are applied to science and technology for solving physics and science problems objectively or systematically. He/she is weak in communicating ideas and/or the student s work shows evidence of plagiarism. Part III Keyword Syllabus: Introduction Basics of the structure of condensed : From atoms to the structures of crystalline, liquid and amorphous substances with showing of specific interest in modern life Fundamentals of scattering techniques: neutron diffraction, X-rays diffraction, scattering mechanisms, similarities and differences in X-ray and neutron scattering Fundamentals of the kinematical scattering theory, correlation between real and reciprocal space and its relevance to understand the structure of Small-angle-X-ray-scattering (SAXS) and small-angle-neutron-scattering (SANS), scattering by non-crystalline Inelastic-neutron-scattering (INS) and Quasi-elastic-neutron-scattering (QENS), atomic and molecular motion and magnetic and crystal field excitations Specific case-studies, atomic/molecular motion in liquids, the structure of bulk metallic glasses, magnetic shape-memory alloys, the dislocation density to strengthen metallic, internal stress measurements in engineering, interaction of water with biomolecules, etc. AP6180 4
