Introduction The paper refers to the diversity of the vascular plants growing in some foreststeppe meadows from the eastearn part of Moldavia (Romania). It contains the list of the vascular flora from the studied area (the localities Osoi, Popricani, Tomeşti and Vulturi, the Iaşi county), the floristic analysis, the analysis of the life forms, of the phytogeographical elements and of the xerophilous character of the plants, as well as some aspects of the studied phytocoenosis. Method The vascular flora species were collected from field, then they were prepared for the personal herbarium. For the study of the vegetation, we have used the method known from the literature in the field, devised by J. Braun-Blanquet and his collaborators. The surface of the annotations was 200m 2. Results and discussions The list of the vascular flora. In the following list, the localities are codified as follows: Osoi (Os), Popricani (Po), Tomeşti (To) and Vulturi (Vu), all from the Iaşi county. The plants are put in the alphabetical order of families, genera and species [4]. The species cited only in literature [3] are not taken into consideration in all the cases when the * Biological Research Institute, Carol I, 20 A, , Iaşi, Romania, tel./fax: or

The above list contains a number of 211 taxa of angiospermous, dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous - 22 taxa are cited only in literature [3]. These taxa belong to 33 families and 136 genera, with 199 species and 12 subspecies. In the field we have found 189 species and subspecies and from all of these the following taxa are on the red list of vascular plants from Romania [10] and they need an adecquate protection: Centaurea apiculata ssp. adpressa (R), Crambe tatarica (V/R), Dianthus capitatus ssp. 92

5 adrzejowskianus (R), Erysimum cuspidatum (R), Hierochloë repens (R), Mercurialis ovata (R), Serratula radiata (R), Silaum silaus (R), Trinia multicaulis (R). We also mention that close to Vulturi we have observed the species Stemmacantha serratuloides (Georgi) M. Dittrich, which is also rare (R) on the red list. In a mesohigrophilous meadow close to Osoi we have identified the following species: Aster linosyris (L.) Bernh., A. sedifolius L., Cephalaria transylvanica (L.) Roemer & Schultes. Life forms [4]: H. = 63%; Ht. = 13.6%; Ch. = 2.3%; G. = 7.4%; T. = 9.1%; Ph. = 4.5%. Concerning the life forms, the most numerous species are hemicryptophytes (63%), the next being the hemitherophytes (13.6%), a normal situation for a meadow where perennial and biennial herbaceous plants prevail. There is a certain number of annual plants, therophytes (9.1%), the next being the geophytes (7.4%). Also, the phanerophytes (4.5%) and the chamaephytes (2.3%) are in small number. Phytogeographical elements [4]: Euras. = 35.2%; Cont. = 16.7%; Eur., Eur. centr. and Medit. = 20.1%; Pont. = 4.5%; Pont.-medit. = 6.1%; Pont.-balc. = 2.2%; Pont.- pan. = 2.8%; Pont.-cauc. = 0.5%; Pont.-pan.-balc. = 5%; Circ. = 2.2%; Cosm. and Adv. = 4.5%. Concerning the phytogeographical elements, the most numerous species are, normally, Eurasian, European and central European, amounting to a total of 55.3%, that is more than half of all species. The percentage of continental species is very significant (16.7%). The species of Pontic origin are in a fairly large number (a total of 21.1%). The circumpolar species (2.2%), as well as the cosmopolitan and adventive ones (4.5%) are in small number. U (humidity), T (temperature), R (the soil reaction-ph) [11]: U 0 = 3.4%; U 1 + U 1,5 = 13.8%; U 2 + U 2,5 = 59%; U 3 + U 3,5 = 21.4%; U 4 = 1.7%; U 6 = 0.5%; T 0 = 13.3%; T 2 + T 2,5 = 4%; T 3 + T 3,5 = 48.5%; T 4 + T 4,5 = 31.2%; T 5 = 2.9%; R 0 = 25.4%; R 2 = 1.1%; R 3 + R 3,5 = 15.6%; R 4 + R 4,5 = 52%; R 5 = 5.8%. Concerning the humidity tolerance of the plants, it can be noticed that the majority of them are adapted to the xerophilous conditions (72.8% of all species). Thus, it can be said that these meadows are xeromesophilous to mesophilous, with an increased character of aridity, because of the great proportion of the xeromesophytic species (59%), the next being the mesophytic (21.4%) and xerophytic (13.8%). Concerning the temperature, the great number of species are mesothermophytic (48.5%), the next being the subthermophytic (31.2%). Concerning the soil reaction, the most numerous plants are weak acidophilous (52%) and eurytopic (25.4%), followed by the medium acidity ones (15.6%). The vegetation. A phytosociological table was drawn and it shows the abundancedominance (AD) and the constancy (K) of the species (table I). The integration of the analysed phytocoenosis in a coenosystem is the following: Festuco Brometea Br.-Bl. et R. Tx. ex Klika et Hadac 1944; Festucetalia valesiacae Br.-Bl. et R. Tx. ex Br.-Bl. 1949; Festucion valesiacae Klika 1931; Medicagini Festucetum valesiacae Wagner Conclusions This study is part of a research project undertaken in The analysed phytocoenosis and the whole region are part of the forest-steppe 93

6 94 zone. The integration in a coenosystem is the following: Festuco Brometea Br.- Bl. et R. Tx. ex Klika et Hadac 1944; Festucetalia valesiacae Br.-Bl. et R. Tx. ex Br.-Bl. 1949; Festucion valesiacae Klika 1931; Medicagini Festucetum valesiacae Wagner The studied meadows are hay meadows. They contain numerous species that ensure the pabular basis of them. The meadows are well maintained, usually being placed on the slopes of the hills and they are not in agricultural use. Only in some places can we find ruderal plants or field-weeds, depending on proximity of roads and crop-fields. From the point of wiew of tolerance to aridity, these meadows are xeromesophilous to mesophilous, with an increased character of aridity, as it is shown by the analysis of species. The meadows of Popricani and Vulturi are the most xerophilous (Stipa pennata grows there), their floristical composition being similar to the meadows of Valea lui David (Iaşi), which is a natural reservation. Also, at Popricani and Vulturi we can find some rare species in our flora, including species on the red list of vascular plants. In the present European and world context, a great importance is given to preservation in situ of life diversity. That is why, we consider that it is necessary to create new reservations of forest-steppe meadows. Such surfaces covered with forest-steppe meadows have been shrinking under the human influence, therefore knowledge of them will allow their future protection. BIBLIOGRAPHY 1.
